Dear Newsgroup ~

The authoritative Complete Peerage, 11 (1949): 301-302 (sub Saint
Amand) gives a good account of the life history of Sir William
Beauchamp (died 1457), Lord Saint Amand. Sir William Beauchamp is
there identified as the "elder son of Sir Walter Beauchamp, by
Elizabeth, daughter and coheiress of John Roches." No birth date is
provided for William, however.

In the published Redaction of Somer's Chronicle, it is reported that
William Beauchamp, Lord Saint Amand, was born in 1407:

"1407 Nativitas domini Willelmi beauchamp domini sancti amandi"

[Reference: Camden Miscellany 34 (Camden Soc. 5th Ser. 10) (1997): 278.

The editor reports that this chronicle "is the only evidence of his
[William's] date of birth; he was married in or before 1426."

Recently, I learned that Sir William Beauchamp, Lord Saint Amand, was
styled "cousin" by King Henry VI of England [Reference: C.P., 11
(1949): 303, footnote d, citing Nicolas, Proceedings of Privy Council
6: 187, 222, 269]. Sir William Beauchamp and King Henry VI were doubly
related in the 5th and 8th degrees of kinship (otherwise 4th cousins,
three times removed), by virtue of common descent from William de
Beauchamp (died 1269), of Elmley, Worcestershire.

I hadn't noticed this before: the Blounts of Elmley Lovet, Worcs. (Sir
Walter Blount, etc.) are said to be descended from Isabel, daughter of
Wm de Beauchamp & Isabel Mauduit, above. This makes Sir Walter Blount a
third cousin (once removed) of Blanche of Lancaster, which might explain
his close Lancastrian tie (he was one of John of Gaunt's executors, and
died at Shrewsbury while wearing Henry IV's livery).

1. William de Beauchamp, d. 1269 = Isabel Mauduit
2. Isabel de Beauchamp, widow of Henry Lovet = William le Blount
3. Sir Walter le Blount (d. 1324), M.P. Worcester, 1318, 1321 = Joan de
Sodington
4. Sir John le Blount (d. 1358) = Isolde de Mountjoy
5. Sir Walter Blount (1348-1403) = Sancha de Ayala

CP notes the identity of Isabel, wife of William le Blount as only a
possibility, but I thought I remembered Croke giving fairly convincing
presentation of this. It might be nice to review that particular
question.

Given that Henry VI addressed another descendant of Mauduit / Beauchamp
as cousin (apparently based on no closer relationship than this), I
wonder if any similar expression of kinship by Henry IV, V or VI to
Blounts or to Walter, 1st Lord Mountjoy (who would be related in the
same degree) could be found to support this descent?

Dear Nat
Leo's Genealogics site has your number 4 (below) Sir John le Blount's wife,
as Eleanor Beauchamp. He doesn't have another wife listed. Can you comment
please?

Yes. The second wife attributed to him in some source (a visitation
pedigree maybe?) used by Burke's (which has the two wives) is ignored by
Complete Peerage, which lists only one wife, Isolda. There is an
article discussing and disproving the alleged Blount-Beauchamp marriage
*in this generation* (she is assigned as a daughter of one of the Lords
Beauchamp of Hache): on this Cecil R. Humphery-Smith, "The Blount
Quarters," _The Coat of Arms_ 4 [1957], 224-7, is corrected by G. D.
Squibb, "The Heirs of Beauchamp of Hatch," ibid., pp. 275-7.

Furthermore, I don't have it in front of me but I remember that Croke
prints or quotes from a deed in which Isolda is mentioned as the then
wife of sir John le Blount in (I think) 1352, which is definitely after
the birth of Walter, who had been erroneously assigned (with his next
elder brother) to the second wife. The evidence is that Sir John Blount
(no. 4 above) only ever had one wife, Isolda de Mountjoy, who is
attested as his wife after the apparent birth year of Sir Walter.
