Dear Newsgroup,

As I have recently found that I am descended from Captain Anthony
Fulgham, of Isle of Wight, VA (c1600-bef. 2 May 1470), purported to be
a son of Hercules Foljambe, I have been perusing Chris Phillip's line
on the Foljambe family at www.medievalgenealogy.org.uk (based on Joseph
Foster's 'Pedigrees of the County Families of Yorkshire'). Chris's
information has proven to be invaluable in my research; and has been
confirmed by many of the entries that I have found on A2A concerning
the Foliambe/Foljambe/Ffoliambe/Foliaumbe family.

I did find a possible conflict in a website based on the "Wolley
Manuscripts, Derbyshire:, the URL is:

The entry from the website reads:

"FOLJAMBE Avena of , - 6675 ff.385-386
Inquisito post mortem, 6 Richard II., on death of Avena FOLJAMBE; she
died on Saturday next after the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin. Avena,
in addition to life interest in Manor of Ockbrook and moiety of Darley,
held lands in Chaddesden, Spondon, Chelmorton, Wardlow, Hartlow,
Newbold, and manor of Hassop, in addition to other lands in counties of
Nottingham and Stafford. Avena, second wife of Godfrey F., was daughter
and heiress of Sir Thomas IRELAND, of Hartshorne, by Avena, daughter
and heiress of Sir Payn de VILERS, of Kinoulton."

The above agrees for the most part with the information given in
Chris's Foljambe line and extends the information by giving an exact
date for Avena's death, and the name of Avena's maternal grandparent
"Sir Payn de Vilers, of Kinoulton". This latter information leads to
the conflict with the Foljambe account, in that Godfrey & Avena's son,
Sir Godfrey Foljambe, is said to have married "Margaret, daughter of
Paganus de Vilers, of Kinoulton". In other words Godfrey would seem to
be marrying Margaret, a close relative (sister/great niece?) of his
grandmother Avena de Vilers!

For ease of reference, I am including the key part of the Foljambe line
from Chris's website:

"Sir GODFREY FOLJAMBE, Knt., knight of the shire for co. Derby 12/14
Ed. 3, and again 38/43/45 Ed. 3, mentioned in the entail of the
Tideswell, Wormhill, Elton, Litton, Hucklow, &c., estates, after the
issue male of his 3 elder half-brothers. He was Seneschal to John, Duke
of Lancaster, and Baro Scaccarii 18 Ed. 3; of Darley, in co. Derby, 33
Ed. 3, 44 Ed. 3, ob 50 Ed. 3, aged 60, and was buried at Bakewell,
where he had founded a chantry dedicated to the Holy Cross.
= ANNE, 1st wife.
= AVENA (2nd wife), daughter and heiress of Sir Thomas Ireland, of
Hartshorne, Knt., by ....., daughter of Vilers.
[Sir Godfrey and Avena had issue]

. Sir GODFREY FOLJAMBE, Knt., ob. v.p. 49 Ed. 3, aged 32.
. = MARGARET, daughter of Paganus de Vilers, of Kinoulton, co.
Notts., married 40 Ed. 3, aged 15.
. = Sir THOMAS REMPSTONE, Knt., 2nd husband, 21 Rich. 2, living 17
Hen. 6, aged 72.
. [Sir Godfrey and Margaret had issue]"

Regards,

Jim Weber

PS. BTW, "6 Rich II" equates (I think) to 1382/3, since Richard's reign
began 1377. How does one go about coming up with the exact date of
Avena's death in that year, given the day "Saturday next after the
Nativity of the Blessed Virgin"?

I should make it clear that the credit for transcribing Foster's lengthy
pedigree must go entirely to Barbarann K. Ayars, who kindly sent me her
transcript to be placed on the website. Of course, like all 19th-century
pedigrees, it may well be inaccurate in parts, though it is obviously
heavily based on record evidence.

The Nativity of the BVM was 8 September, 6 Richard II ran from 22 June
1382-21 June 1383. There is some ambiguity, as the date of the inquisition
is not given (it would be worth checking this in the printed calendars), but
on the assumption it took place within 9 months of Avena's death, the
Naitvity in question would have been Monday 8 September 1382, so the
Saturday following would have been 13 September 1382.

Thank you for the date, Chris.

I notice that Mardi Carter, in a post to SGM, 18 Jul 2001, supported
Barbarann,s Foljambe pedigree. Mardi's post stated that the son
Godfrey Foljambe m. Margaret, daughter of Payne de Villiers of Kinalton
(who was g-grandson of Alexander de VIlliers and Cicely Seis). Mardi
had several sources, which you can see if you look up her post.

If the Inq.P.M. that I found is accurate (as it looks on the surface),
then Avena's father Payne would probably be a brother of one of
Margaret's father's immediate ancestors. He might be a younger
brother, as Kinalton (I assume the same as Kinoulton) seemed to descend
to Margaret's father, while Avena was heiress of her father (of course
he was also described in the IPM as "of Kinoulton").

I googled Kinalton, and found that it was an estate that adjoined the
manor of Colston Bassett. The town of Kinoulton is about 2 miles from
the town of Colston Basett. So, they could still be the same?
