Dear Doug, et al.,

Many thanks for your post of yesterday, including the relevant
text from VCH (Lancs.) concerning Robert de Lathom. The text of the
article does not itself rule out the previously alleged Alfreton
descent, stating re: Amicia de Alfreton that "she probably died
without issue, as these manors [Alfreton & c.] did not remain with
the Lathom family." However, given the subsequent release by Robert
de Lathom of his rights in the lordship of Alfreton to Thomas de
Chaworth, this seems most likely. Add to this that Amicia de
Alfreton was most likely born say 1200-1215 (her nephew Thomas de
Chaworth was born say 1225) and that Sir Robert de Lathom [her
previously alleged son] died ca. 1325, it does seem most likely that
Sir Robert was the son of Joan de Millom as stated in the VCH account
and elsewhere [1].

A beneficial outgrowth of this research is that the ancestry of
Joan de Millom, given in the detailed pedigree below, can now be
appended to that of the Lathoms of Lathom. Joan de Millom married
1stly John de Huddleston, a member of a junior branch of the
Huddlestons of Huddleston [2]. The manor of Millom descended to her
issue by that marriage. Her 2nd marriage to Robert de Lathom is not
noted by Clay, nor does it receive mention in the VCH account which
Doug has provided; however, evidence of the association of John
de Huddleston (son or grandson of Joan by her 1st husband) with
Sir Robert de Lathom (her son by her 2nd) is found in the following
document, which they both witnessed:

Quitclaim of all services due from the manor of Barton, 13 Apr 1304:

(1) Lord William of Clifton

(2) John of Barton

Which (2) and his heirs hold of (1), reserving to (1) the rights of
taking dead wood from the common woods in Barton (except from Barton
park and the woods in Barton fields), for burning, building and
fencing at Sir William's messuages at Clifton, and of keeping fifty
pigs in the wood called Stockorheuid.
Witnesses: Lord John of Hodeliston [Hoddleston], Lord Robert of Lathum
[Lathom], Lord Henry of Kyghley [Keighley], Sir William Banaster,
knight, Thomas Travers, sheriff of Lancashire, Richard de Hoghton,
Gilbert of Singelton [Singleton], William of Sotheworth [Southworth].
Given at Lancaster, the Monday before the feast of Tibertius and
Valerianus, 32 Edward I [3]

In addition to the descent of Joan de Millom from Godard de
Boiville, this pedigree reflects in part the following relationships (1st
and 2nd marriages for Sir Robert de Lathom noted <1> and <2>):

Adam de Millom
(or de Boiville)

V V V
from whom, from whom, from whom,

Again, thanks to Doug McDonald for his efforts in researching
this relationship. Any comment, criticism or relevant documentation
concerning the above is welcome, as always.

Cheers,

John *

Re Hudleston genealoy.

You may already be aware of his, but the Hudleston family has produced at
least one professional genealogist - C. Roy Hudleston (I notice that The
National Archives describes him as a journalist and antiquary). He died
about 15 years ago - sadly, I only realised a week after his death that he
lived in a square in Hove next to me.

Anyway, I would guess that he did some fairly thorough research on the
Hudlestons. Certainly his book on 'Cumberland Families and Heraldry' has
lengthy entries on the Hudlestons of Millom, the Hudlestons of Hutton John,
the Hudlestons of Kelston, and the Hudlestons of Rainors. His papers, which
I would think worth digging through, are deposited at Durham University.

Dear Chris,

Thanks for the advisory re: C. Roy Hudleston. Unfortunately,
Durham is geographically inaccessible (whether UK or NC), but I will
make a note re: his Cumberland Families and Heraldry for a future
fossick at the LOC.
Cheers,

John
