Robert de Vespont (1239-1264) fought in the battle of Evesham. He was
opposed to the policies of King Henry III. He was married to Isabel FitzJohn.
Does anyone have information concerning these people, particularly Isabel ?
Thanks for your help.

Notes on Isabel's father:

Lord of Berkhampstead, Sheriff of Yorkshire, in 1234, Lord Justice of Ireland,
in 1246.

John, being next male heir of that family on the death of William FitzPiers,
Earl of Essex, in 1227, paid a fine to the king of 300 marks for those lands
which were his father's and did by hereditary right belong to him, whereof
this last Earl William died seised. In the 18th year of Henry III., this John
was constituted Sheriff of Yorkshire; and in the 21st year of the same reign,
upon the treaty then made between the king and the barons, whereby, in
consideration of the great charter and charters of the forests being
confirmed, a thirtieth part of all men's moveables were given to the king,
this feudal lord was admitted one of the privy council held at London, he was
one of those at the time sent to the Pope's legate, to prohibit his attempting
anything therein prejudicial to the interests of the king and kingdom. In
eight years afterwards, John Fitz Geoffrey was one of the commissioners sent
from King Henry (with Roger Bigod, Earl of Norfolk, and others) to the council
at Lyons, in order to complain of the great extractions made upon the realm by
the holy see; and the next year, 1246, was constituted Justice of Ireland,
where, for his services, he received a grant from the crown of the Isles of
Thomond. John was the feudal lord of Berkhampstead and Kirtling manors, and of
Shere, Fambridge and other estates. He died in November 1258.

How do they come by the name "de Mandeville?"
Thanks

The son of Aveline de Clair was John Fitz Geoffrey.

Beatrice de Say was granddaughter of Beatrice de Mandeville, sister of
Geoffrey de Mandeville, Earl of Essex. It was on the basis of this
marriage that Geoffrey Fitz Piers was made Earl of Essex, and inhonor of
this descent, their sons adopted the Mandeville surname (the family of
Geoffrey Fitz Piers did not have a surname, but used patronymics).

Sportsfans here will be surprised not to see Todd protesting as he so often
has (probably most recently on 10 Jul 98):

>> Maud de Mandeville = Piers deLutegareshale. They had a son:

>This relationship has been discussed here before. It is without
foundation, and most likely derived from a misinterpretation of a chart
in the CP article on Essex. Her surname and origins are unknown.<

Thought I'd give him a break, since he's no doubt (understandably) simply
tired of saying it himself.

In a recent posting, reference was made to Geoffrey Fitz Piers, Earl of Essex,
and to his father, Piers de Lutegareshale. Since about 1900, historians have
been modernizing the name Piers as Peter. Consequently, it is more
appropriate to refer to these men as Geoffrey Fitz Peter and Peter de
Lutegareshale. As for Peter de Lutegareshale, I have found a reference to him
as Peter the Forester and as such I presume he held the position as forester of
the royal forest of Ludgershale, Wiltshire. I imagine with a bit of detective
work, Peter the Forester's family and ancestry can be traced. In addition to
modernizing the name Piers to Peter, I also recommend using the modern spelling
of Ludgershale.

As pointed out by Cris, Peter the Forester's wife, Maud, was not a Mandeville.
My research suggests that either Peter or his wife, Maud, was a sibling of
Roger Fitz Geoffrey and his brother, Robert, who were knights and chief tenants
of the Earls of Salisbury. This would explain the appearance of the names,
Geoffrey and Robert, among Peter and Maud's children. If correct, then
Geoffrey Fitz Peter, Earl of Essex, obtained his given name from a grandfather
named Geoffrey.

Much more research is required to find all the answers. I feel certain that
the ancestry of Geoffrey Fitz Peter can be unravelled if someone has the time
and patience to do it. I'm tired of copying inaccurate and incomplete
information from secondary sources, esepcially for this family.

Best always, Douglas Richardson
