Some time ago I made a post of all the Ida names I could find in DD. One of
them can be summarized as:

DD Page 849 & 1004
Ida daughter of William fitz Gerard mentioned in Cartulary of Eynsham charter
of 1174-89 being subsequent to her husband's, Walchelin Hareng, (son of
Helewisa eldest d of Walchelin Waard, and he had a niece Matilda d of Gerard
de Lucy) death, and attested by her brother Richard de la Mare.

It is not clear if this Ida was a "de la Mare" or perhaps, since Ida's father
was not described as de la Mare, the brother Richard was a half or step
brother. Much of Walchelin Hareng extended family can be deduced from
entries in DD. Perhaps there is a connection to the Gerard of North Aston
mentioned below.

I decided to carry out further work on the early "de la Mare" family, mainly
those of Oxfordshire and Wiltshire. Apart from CP, DD and DP, I have checked
the entries in the Bradenstoke cartulary (abbreviated as B + charter number)
and Eynsham cartulary (abbreviated as E + charter no.) and some information
from Duchess of Cleveland's "Battle Abbey Roll" (1889). From the PRO A2A
search facilities, there is further de la Mares to be found in Suffolk
Record Office. (Ipswich Branch: The Iveagh (Phillipps) Suffolk Manuscripts
re: Dodnash priory Ref HD 1538/202). Rosie Bevan has also kindly helped and
given me some details and useful advise.

In DD, page 331 (Bohun) there are a number of refs to a Richard de Meri,
brother of the Humphrey de Bohun who m Matilda d of Edward of Salisbury. It
would seem that the descendants of this Richard de Meri died out, but I
suspect the "de Meri" has the same origin as "de la Mare"

In B, some of the "de la Mare" family have been indexed as lords of Rendcomb
(Gloucestershire), but I don't know the evidence for this title as Rendcomb
does not appear in the text (nor in E, which is geographically closer). I
assume there is a family relationship between those so indexed, however this
assumption precludes the Henry de la Mare (-1211), who married Petronilla d&
h of Guy de Craon and who is known to have held "Ryndecombe manor" as being a
lord of Rendcombe, a conflict I have been unable to resolve.

I obtained a copy of E, reproduced in two vols by the Oxford Historical
Society (1907 & 1908) from my local lending library. There were two
problems, i) The charters are not translated, (except for a handful of
Anglo-Saxon charters) and my knowledge of Latin is almost non-existent, and
ii) I only had them for a short time, being from the British Library, I could
not extend the loan period, so with great care I put them through a scanner.

Bearing in mind that my Latin translation may be at fault, and that I have
made some (hopefully) educated assumptions, here is a summary of my findings:

More details of the Ida mentioned above:

E105: c.1170x90, Walchelinus Harang (then m to Ida) gift of land in
Woodeaton;
E106: 1160x90, Walchelinus Harang gift of land, my mother Halewisa (by E139
she was dau of Walchelini Waard and in 1152x70 she was married to Willelmi
Avenel) Wts Radulfo Hareng, Humfrido Hareng;
E107: 1170x75, Walchelinus Hareng (then married) confirms gift of manor of
Brize Norton manor, Tropa manor and "aliam" in Woodeaton to Eynsham;
E109: 1192, Matilda de Lucy d of Gerardi de Luci, "my mother's brother
Walchelinus Harang", confirmation of the gift of Woodeaton manor, one wts was
Gillebertus de Ida;
E111: 1174x89 Charter of Ida (wife of Walchelinus Harang) filia Willelmi
filii Gerardi, re land in Fonthill Bishop, Wilts; a wts includes Richard de
la Mare my brother;
E170: Richard de la Mara appears as a wts of a charter dated 1182x5 of
Radulfi Grant

This Richard de la Mare is perhaps the Richard (-<1220) of Steeple Aston etc
below. If so, probably related to the John "meretrices" of the King's (Hy
III?) court. I wonder if this office was hereditary?

Offley church rights were held by Thomas de la Mare and also by Ralph de

Geoffrey St Leger confirming this gift is dated 1197x1207 (wts inc Wal de
Nevil and Wm St Leger) Amice was dau of William Capra (-<July 1176) by Alice
and m(2?), by 1207 Robert de La Mara]
In 1199x1219 This gift of Offley was confirmed by Wm Marshall, earl of
Pembroke, which suggests that, but for the gift by Amice, Wm Marshall would
have had some right's to this church, perhaps through his mother Sybil sister
of Patrick 1Er Salisbury
In 1197x1207 this gift was also confirmed by Geoffrey St Ledger II grandson
of Amice, a witness being an Alan de la Mare
Perhaps this is the same Robert de la Mare who held Wallingford and Lavington
and father of Peter shown above.
