With the Heralds Principal Visitations of Shropshire, 1307-1327, begins the
recorded pedigree of Barker. We find Randolph de Coverall, alias Barker.
In the reign of Edward II, 1307-1327, the Manor of Calverhall, or Coverall,
in the Parish of Adderly, formed part of the possessions of Bartholomew de
Baldesmere. Randolph de Coverall married in 1319, Margaret, Daughter of
Peter Pigott, of Willaston, Shropshire.
During the Civil War (the Manor falling into the King's hands and
being given by him to William de Dunstan) William de Calverhall, son of
Randolph, seems to have fled southward with his family, and to have
reappeared at Hallon-in-Warfield, Shropshire, under the name of William de
le Barker, a name either derived from dealing in oak bark, or from some
unknown relationship with one already bearing the name, for this surname
appears in the Close Roll of Henry III (1227) and also as tenant in
Stanton-Lacy in 1272.
Reassuming connection with the North Country, besides lands in
Goulston, they became possessed of estates in Wolverton-Colchurst and
Hallon, upon which the elder branch of the family settled; the younger
according to the custom of the Manor, continuing to hold Aston, in Claverly,
Shropshire.

Prior to the reign of Henry VI (1425) William Barker, of Hallon, gentleman,
married Ann, daughter of John Colynson Rowlowe, of Rowloe, parish of
Warfield, possessed great estates there and died in the reign of Edward IV
(1480). His great grandson, William Barker, alias Coverall, of Aston, Parish
of Claverly, married Margaret, daughter of John Goulston, heiress of
Goulston near Market Drayton; their eldest son, John Barker, married
Elizabeth Hill, daughter of Sir Thomas Hill, of Hawkston Park, Hodnet,
Shropshire, and sister of Sir Rowland Hill, first Protestant Lord Mayor of
London (1519). Alice Barker, only daughter of John and Elizabeth Hill
Barer, was the favorite niece of her uncle Sir Rowland Hill, and was his
co-heiress, married first Sir Thomas Leigh, of Stonely, Warwickshire,
Knight, first Baron of Stonely, 143. Her hand was said to be the reward of
her husband's fidelity and industry, and her inheritance gave the wealth and
estates which support the peerage of Liegh of Stonely, granted to her
descendants. Stoneliegh Abbey came to Alice Barker from her uncle Sir
Rowland. The Abbey is in Warwickshire near Kenilworth. It was a twelfth
century foundation and had a majestic gatehouse of the fourteenth century,
now standing. The Abbey was owned by Henry VIII. Sir Thomas erected a
spacious mansion upon the old site. Sir Thomas Leigh died in 1571 and was
buried in Mercers Chapel, London, and his widow, Alice Barker Leigh, is
buried at Stoneleigh. Her granddaughter, Alice Barker Leigh, married Sir
Robert Dudley (son of the Earl of Leicester). She was his second wife and
in 1644 she was created in her own right, Duchess of Dudley, Charles I
