Ancestral Roots, 7th Edition, Line 96-27 has Gui de Thouars as the
second son of William, Vicomte de Thouars and Aenor de Leusigne. In checking
the archive, I find that on 17 Oct. 1998, Richard Borthwick posted that
Geoffrey V, 1139-1173 (wife unknown) was the father of Guy de Thouars who
married first in 1199, Constance, Duchess of Brittany. Also, on 3 Sept.
1999, Adrian Channing posted under Lusignan's Part 1/4 that Aimee/Aenor de
Lusignan married Geoffrey V de Thouars, and under note d, that their son Gui
de Thouars, married Constance de Bretagne. Could someone tell me which one
is the correct father and mother of Guy/Gui de Thouars, husband of Constance
of Brittany?
Thank you very much for your help.
Joan Burdyck
The Thouars family is difficult to trace with certainty, partly because they
followed a pattern of succession common in Poitou where the office of
viscount was taken in turn by each able son in a generation before being
inherited by the next according to the more usual primogeniture (usually but
not invariably from the eldest brother).
According to ES and most other sources, Gui de Thouars who became duke of
Brittany by right of his first wife Constance was the third son of Geoffroy
V by an unknown wife (who _may_ have been Aimee de Lusignan, daughter of
Hugues VII le Brun & his wife Sarracena).
Geoffroy V's elder brother Guillaume, viscount of Thouars before 1139 who
died probably before 1151, was married to Aumou de Mareuil and had no
offspring according to ES. What source does Weis give for "Aenor de
Leusigne" as his wife?
