Hi all,

Complete Peerage, vol. 12/2, page 319, has a brief account of the life of Richard le Waleys, son and heir of Henry le Waleys of Burghwallis, Yorkshire, by his second wife, Elizabeth de St. Mary. Richard le Waleys was born about 1226 and died before 17 September 1272. CP states that the name of his wife is unknown.

Recently I came across a record of his marriage settlement on the TNA website, which enables identification of his wife:
Marriage settlement (by grant)

Richard's wife was Aubrey (Albreda) daughter of Sir Thomas FitzWilliam of Woodhall (near Wombwell), and Emley Yorkshire, (d. aft. 1259) ancestor of the Fitzwilliam family of Emley and Sprotborough, by his wife Agnes Bertram, daughter of Sir Roger Bertram II, of Mitford, Northumberland.

Although the Waleys family of Burghwallis died out in the late fourteenth century, Richard and Aubrey did leave descendants through their granddaughter Nicola who married her second cousin William Vavasour of Hazlewood, Yorkshire.

Dear all,

It has been pointed out to me that the marriage of Nichole Waleys to William le Vavasour is by no means certain.

Complete Peerage, vol. 12/2, 234, note (a) states: In the 1st edn. of this work she [Nichole] is given as a da. of Sir Stephen Waleys, of Newton (see WALEYS), but no documentary proof of this has been found.

Regards,

John

Dear John ~

The following record pertains to the Waleys and Vavasour families. Possibly it is of interest to you.

In 1317 Richard son of Stephen le Waleys and Eleanor his wife gave 20s. to have license of concord with Robert son of William de Vavasur respecting a moiety of the manors of Helaw and Aynsty, Yorkshire.

Eleanor, the above mentioned wife of Richard le Waleys, was formerly the wife of Sir Robert de Brus, lord of Annandale, Earl of Carrick, who died in 1304.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah

Hi Douglas,

Thanks for that. The concord was duly made:

6 June 1317, Octave of Trinity, 10 Edward II, Richard son of Stephen le Waleys and Eleanor his wife, querents; Robert son of William le Vavasour, deforciant, of a moiety of the manor of Helagh in Aynsty which Nichola widow of William le Vavasour holds in dower. Covenant. Richards's right. Robert for himself and his heirs has granted that the said moiety, which Nichola held in dower of his estate on the day of this fine and which at her death should revert to him and his heirs, shall remain to Richard and Eleanor and Richard's heirs to hold of the chief lords, etc. Robert and his heirs to warrant. For 200 marks of silver. Made in the presence and with the consent of Nichola, who has done fealty to Richard and Eleanor in court.
