The Gen-Med archives, 1997, File 182, Generations IX and X, by Todd A.
Farmerie has Gutina, the wife of Fernan Gonzalez (fl. 866) the Black as
the daughter of Muno Nunez of Branosera.

The archives, 2001, File 550, Part II, by Francisco Antonio Doria has
Gutina as the daughter of Diego Rodriguez Porcelos of Castile. This
latter is reported from the Theroff files.

Is there a resolution to this, or is it that an arguable case can be
made for either?

My source were the Theroff files, which are based on
ES, I think. I posted them with all due caveats...

The Theroff database declines dramatically in its value as one
approaches the borders of well documented genealogy. There is no
evidence whatsoever allowing Gutina to be placed as daughter of
Diego Rodriguez. This derives from the old legitimist claims
which required connecting the later Counts of Castile with the
earlier ones, ignoring that in the period in question, the
possession of the County was not hereditary.

What do we know about Gutina? almost nothing. That her husband
was named Fernando is proven by the name of her son, Count
Gonzalo Fernandez. At least one early genealogical source names
the father as Fernando Gonzalez, but numerous attempts have been
made to derive the later Counts instead from the Nuno/Munio clan
some of whose property and privilages seem to have come to Fernan
Gonzalez. When the clear evidence for Gonzalo Fernandez
possessing the same properties made it impossible to name
Fernan's father Gonzalo Nunez and derive him directly from said
family, the connection was simply bumped back a generation, and
Gonzalo Fernandez was made son of Fernando Nunez (sic) by Gutina,
his documented mother. However, there is no documented Fernando
Nunez/Munoz at the time, while a Count Fernando Gonzalez can be
found, demonstrating that the old tradition is probably more
correct than the ingenious 20th century genealogists. This
leaves the inheritance of the land open to explanation. As the
wife of Gonzalo is out (she having now been demonstrated to be
daughter of an Asturian infante) we turn to his mother, Gutina.
Not only does the name Nuno first appear in the family in this
generation, and the Nunez/Munioz properties first appear to have
been owner by her son Gonzalo, but likewise, her relative
prominence in documents would be consistent with just such an
origin (the Nunez/Munoz clan being, at this time, the most
prominant in Castile, in which primacy they were supplanted by
the descendants of Gutina). It was based on this conjecture that
Gutina, mother of Gonzalo Fernandez, was suggested as daughter of
Munio Nunez.

While one can question her placement here, at least it can be
reasonably argued, as opposed to her placement in the dynasty of
the first counts, which is only supported by a flawed concept of
an inherited county of Castile.
