Dear Paul,
I believe that we are in general agreement. *In 1293 Iseult de Chernet was dealing with the manor of South Chardford (Fordingbridge Hundred) which passed by inheritance or purchase to Oliver de la Zouche. (Feet of Fines. Hants. Trinity 21 Edw. I, no. 195) I suspect that Oliver may have married a Chernet first and then Joan de Cobham widow of Michael Columbariis. Hugh de Chernet held Charford in 1166 (of Hugh le Port).[1] John de Chernet was succeeded by Geoffrey Chernet before 1271. [2] In 1223 GRANTOR: John de Kernet. GRANTEE: Robert de Kernet.] Grant, indented, of land in Breamore, in exchange for other land. COUNTY: (Hants.).[3] Parties: John de Kernet & Canons of Breamore (Brumor'). Place or Subject: Chapel of the Blessed Mary of Cherford (Chardeforde): [Hants]. Undated[4] There is a grant in frank almoin by John Fraunceis, son of William Fraunceis of 'la Hale', to the canons of Brommore, of land [in Brommore]. Witnesses: John de Kernet', Hamo de Berchamton, and Hugh de Burgate, knights, John de Brommore, and others (named). [Hants][5] .][1] Confirmation by Geoffrey de Kernet of the grant made by Hugh de Kernet, his father, to the church of St. Michael, Brumore, of the tenth sheaf of corn from his demesne at Avene, and every tenth swath from his meadow. [2]
If Manasser Biset held the whole of Fordingbridge Hundred, how was Chernet holding? A copy of a charter of Henry II shows that Burgate and Rockborne, which belonged to the king at the time of the Domesdey survey (V. C. H. Hants., i, 455b) were granted with other lands to Manser Bisset before 1175.[1] Certainly Olive la Zouche was a descendant of Manasser Biset through his grandmother, Margaret Biset who married Roger la Zouche. She was the supposedly the daughter of Henry Biset and granddaughter of Manasser Biset and Alice de Cany. Nevertheless, I cannot ascertain if Oliver got the land by inheritance.
1305. 22 May. Kempston. Grant to Olive le Zusche and his heirs of free warren in all their demesne lands in Suthchardeford and La Hyde, co. Shamt.[1] By 1316 John la Zouche, son of Oliver and Alice Gilberd are responsible for Hundred of Forde: Villa de Chardeforde. According to VCH Hampshire, South Charford was held by John la Zouche in 1316 and in 1326 had settled the manor on himself and Eleanor his wife [Feudal Aids,ii, 322] with reversion to their son Oliver and Isabel his wife [Feet of Fines, Easter, 19 Edward II (1326). Oliver succeeded to the manor after 1349[Cal. Of Close Rolls, 1327-30, p. 506; 1349-54, pp. 16, 68; Feudal Aids, ii, 349]
Chronologically, it is impossible for a daughter of Oliver la Zouche to have a daughter married to John Popham, so it is a later Oliver or more probably the John mentioned here:1394-- Release by John Popham kt. and Matilda, his wife, to John Chynnore and Robert Waryner, executors of Will of John South (Zouche)kt., of all actions. Dated at Brommore [Hants.]. 23 January 1394. 1377 IPM John Fitz Elys of Brokenhurst 28 Jan 50 Edw. III. Southampton. Avene: a messuage and land held jointly with Isabel (de Beche) his wife, who survives, to them and their assigns of John la Zouche, kt. by knights service.[Avon otherwise: abon, 688-1300; afen, 672-12; afene, 961; Avene, 1234-see above Hugh le Port]
Best,
Pat
