Dear Patricia Junkin:

Your observations regarding the Zouche family, and their apparant
connection to property in S.Charford, Fordingbridge Hundred, and Nether
Burgate. This is in addition to the Manor of Burgate held by Manaser Biset
late 1200s:

My understanding is briefly:

1280: Agreement for the partition of lands of Manser Bisset between John de
Ripariis, John de Wotton and Ela his wife, and Hugh de Plessietis and
Isabella his wife. (PRO)
1280: Jury stipulate that John de Ripariis, one of the heirs of Manser
Bisset, now holds the manor of Burgate, and that John de Wotton and Ela his
wife the other heir holds the manor of Rokeburne. John de Ripariis summoned
to declare by what warrant he holds the liberties in the Hundred of
Fordingbridge produced the charter to Manser Bisset. (PRO)

The above properties were held by the Ripariis family right through to the
end of the line 1455. William Bulkley deputy Chief Justice Chester
inherited the Ripariis property through his mother Christiana Ripariis.
Charles Bulkley son of William Bulkley 1431-1482 inherited the property
from his father late 1450s.

Hampshire Public Records Office hold considerable records of these
properties and their ownership which eventually were held by Charles
Bulkley.

Presumably the 1280 Grant of Manaser Bisset represented gifts to his
daughters, one being the wife of John de Ripariis.

Clarity appears to be required regarding the Zouche and Popham involvement.
My understanding is briefly:

1270: Helen (Elen) (wife) Alan de La Zouche received 1/3 dower of property
in Chinnor (Oxford). She died 1296. (BHO)
1394 (before): Sir John Popham married Matilda daughter of Oliver de La
Zouche and Helen and Alan de La Zouche - lord of Chinnor. (BHO).
1459/70: John Popham (descendent) never married, and left Chinnor (Oxford)
and various properties in Huntingdonshire and Berkshire to Alice Hertshorn
mother of Elizabeth wife of Charles Bulkley. Eventually these properties
were inherited by Charles Bulkley. Writ DCE Alice late wife of William
Hertshorn 1470 (Fine Rolls)

Your advice that John Popham's gift to Alice Hertshorn included properties
in S.Charford, Fordingbridge Hundred, and Nether Burgate which apparantly
were at one time held by Matilda daughter of Oliver de La Zouche appears to
be in conflict with other recorded data. I imagine that the 1468 Account of
Descent of the Manor of Burgate by Charles Bulkley (in French!) would
establish the correct record. (PRO).

Anyhow there is some confusion:

1390/1391: William Lekhull and wife Katherine de Ripariis claimed Manor of
Burgate and Hundred of Fordbridge - she being the great grand daughter of
Sir John Ripariis and wife Maud - granted with fine 20 pounds (M53/366/8/9)

This date 1390/1391 is about 70 years prior to the date that John Popham
(descendent) granted his gift to Alice Hertshorn.

1456: Writ Order William Bulkeley (Eyton) to restore to John Appleby the
manor of Burgate. (National Archives).
1456: To Escheator Southampton to take fealty William Bulkeley of Eyton,
and give him livery of Nether Burgate and Hundred (Remainder to John
Popham) William Bulkeley age 60 or more. (Close Rolls)

By the way Pat I have been studying some London documents during the period
1200-1500. The Zouche family occurred a number of times.

Dear Rip:

Thank you for your observations.

If you check the Hampshire Public Records Office, you will discover a
wealth of information that will assist you in your understanding.

If you discover any record of John Bulkley, Charles Bulkley, or Robert
Bulkley (Salisbury) during the 140s, please advise.

But ensure that you are not referring to Charles Bulkley (1431-1482) son of
William Bulkley dep Chief Justice, or Charle's sons Robert and William who
arrived at adulthood during the 1480s.

Dear Richard Carruthers:

Regret that the Charles Bulkley you have addressed is the grandson of
Charles Bulkley (1431-1482), and has no meaningful connection with the
Bulkleys of Wiltshire under review.

Your quoted Charles Bulkley was a prominent administrator/lawyer who
represented the interests of Catherine of Arragon and Anne Boleyn
1525-1550. His son William taught the future Queen Elizabeth prior to his
early death 1552.

Please check your records for the 1400s. Currently I suspect a connection
between the Bulkleys of Wiltshire and either Robert or Roger Bulkley
(brothers of William Bulkley of Eyton dep Chief Justice Chester 1390-1465.)

I will advise if I should find data relating to the Ernle gang.

Dear Paul,
I believe that we are in general agreement. *In 1293 Iseult de Chernet was dealing with the manor of South Chardford (Fordingbridge Hundred) which passed by inheritance or purchase to Oliver de la Zouche. (Feet of Fines. Hants. Trinity 21 Edw. I, no. 195) I suspect that Oliver may have married a Chernet first and then Joan de Cobham widow of Michael Columbariis. Hugh de Chernet held Charford in 1166 (of Hugh le Port).[1] John de Chernet was succeeded by Geoffrey Chernet before 1271. [2] In 1223 GRANTOR: John de Kernet. GRANTEE: Robert de Kernet.] Grant, indented, of land in Breamore, in exchange for other land. COUNTY: (Hants.).[3] Parties: John de Kernet & Canons of Breamore (Brumor'). Place or Subject: Chapel of the Blessed Mary of Cherford (Chardeforde): [Hants]. Undated[4] There is a grant in frank almoin by John Fraunceis, son of William Fraunceis of 'la Hale', to the canons of Brommore, of land [in Brommore]. Witnesses: John de Kernet', Hamo de Berchamton, and Hugh de Burgate, knights, John de Brommore, and others (named). [Hants][5] .][1] Confirmation by Geoffrey de Kernet of the grant made by Hugh de Kernet, his father, to the church of St. Michael, Brumore, of the tenth sheaf of corn from his demesne at Avene, and every tenth swath from his meadow. [2]
If Manasser Biset held the whole of Fordingbridge Hundred, how was Chernet holding? A copy of a charter of Henry II shows that Burgate and Rockborne, which belonged to the king at the time of the Domesdey survey (V. C. H. Hants., i, 455b) were granted with other lands to Manser Bisset before 1175.[1] Certainly Olive la Zouche was a descendant of Manasser Biset through his grandmother, Margaret Biset who married Roger la Zouche. She was the supposedly the daughter of Henry Biset and granddaughter of Manasser Biset and Alice de Cany. Nevertheless, I cannot ascertain if Oliver got the land by inheritance.
1305. 22 May. Kempston. Grant to Olive le Zusche and his heirs of free warren in all their demesne lands in Suthchardeford and La Hyde, co. Shamt.[1] By 1316 John la Zouche, son of Oliver and Alice Gilberd are responsible for Hundred of Forde: Villa de Chardeforde. According to VCH Hampshire, South Charford was held by John la Zouche in 1316 and in 1326 had settled the manor on himself and Eleanor his wife [Feudal Aids,ii, 322] with reversion to their son Oliver and Isabel his wife [Feet of Fines, Easter, 19 Edward II (1326). Oliver succeeded to the manor after 1349[Cal. Of Close Rolls, 1327-30, p. 506; 1349-54, pp. 16, 68; Feudal Aids, ii, 349]
Chronologically, it is impossible for a daughter of Oliver la Zouche to have a daughter married to John Popham, so it is a later Oliver or more probably the John mentioned here:1394-- Release by John Popham kt. and Matilda, his wife, to John Chynnore and Robert Waryner, executors of Will of John South (Zouche)kt., of all actions. Dated at Brommore [Hants.]. 23 January 1394. 1377 IPM John Fitz Elys of Brokenhurst 28 Jan 50 Edw. III. Southampton. Avene: a messuage and land held jointly with Isabel (de Beche) his wife, who survives, to them and their assigns of John la Zouche, kt. by knights service.[Avon otherwise: abon, 688-1300; afen, 672-12; afene, 961; Avene, 1234-see above Hugh le Port]
Best,
Pat
