Baldwin of Exeter. He was Sheriff of Devon and 1st Baron of Okehampton; Lord De
La Sap Nehau. Obtained from William the Conqueror the Baroney of Okehampton,
custody of the County of Devon and the governorship of the Castle of Exeter
in fee.

Nottingham, England, (daughter of William PEVERIL and Adeline) d. 27 May
1156. Richard died 8 Sep 1107, buried: Abbey of Monteburg. Also surnamed
De REVIERS.
Created Earl by Henry I and had a grant of the thrid penny. There is reason
to doubt any Earldom. He never called himself Earl. C.P. iv 310 observes
that he was practically landless. According to Burke he resigned the Baroney
of Okehampton, the Sheriffalty of Devon and custody of the castle in favour
of nephew Robert. Apparently received a grant on Isle of Wight by Henry I.
Resided chiefly at Exeter. Lord of Isle of Wight 1101-1107.

BALUN) buried: Quarr Abbey, Binstead, IOW. Baldwin died 4 Jun 1155,
Quarrera Abbey, buried: Quarrera Abbey, IOW, Hants., UK. Besieged by King
Stephen (for supporting Empress Matilda) in 1135, he was obliged to
surrender the Castle of Exeter and all other possessions. Allowed to go free
but he and his family were driven from the Isle of Wight into exile and took
refuge in Anjou. Returned to England in autumn 1139 and seizing Castle
Corfe, held it against Stephen. IN 1141 Empress created him Earl of Devon.

died 10 Sep 1217, buried: Tiverton, Devon. Burke's says that William was
"surnamed VERNON". Also Lord of the Isle of Wight. Present at coronation of
King Richard in 1189, being one of the 4 Earls to bear canopy. William's son
and heir predeceased him, so he was succeeded by his grandson. Earl of Devon
1184-1216.

1173. Maud had previously been married to Robert FitzRoy, natural son of
King Henry I. She was heiress of Baldwin De Gilbert's family (Burke's
Peerage) which has held the Honour of Okehampton and a Shrievalty of Devon
1080-1142. He had a special licence from the Pope to himself and his wife to
have a free chapel at
Okehampton, Devon. LDS Ancestral File call her Maud d'AVRANCHES.
Robert: Obtained the Baroney of Okehampton upon
the resignation of his
Uncle Richard de REDVERS (De REVIERS), as well as the
Sheriffalty of Devon and the Governorship of the Castle of Exeter.
