Dear Newsgroup ~

Complete Peerage 7 (1929): 409 (sub Lancaster) gives the death date of
Henry of Lancaster, Duke of Lancaster, as 24 March 1360/1. In the
modern article on Duke Henry which appeared in Bulletin of John
Rylands Library, 21 (1937): 352–386, the author states on page 358
that the Duke actually died the day previous, that is, 23 March 1361
[1360/1]. In footnote 4 on the same page, the author states the
following:

"The exact date is clearly stated in the following note added to a
contemporary document: "Mesme le jour (i.e., 23 March 1361) en la
matine et mesme l'an susdit, le dit Duke devia a Leycestre et illeosqe
est il sevelé en la novel eovre, c'est assavoir en le Newerk." M.
Bateson, Records of the Borough of Leicester. END OF QUOTE

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah

Douglas,

For what it's worth, Kenneth Fowler, in "The King's Lieutenant", his
1969 biography of Henry of Grosmont, agrees with the 23 March 1361
death date, also citing the 'Records of the Borough of Leicester' as
his source:

"On the morning of Tuesday 23 March he died at Leicester. [footnote:
'Records of the Borough of Leicester', II, 124; 'Reading', 150.]
Edward [III] appears to have received the news in Windsor Park on the
25th."
