Can anyone help on the Murdac family? I can find almost nothing on them,
even in Marshall or Whitmore. I have three female Murdacs of unknown and
uncertain relationship to each other:

Hawise de Murdac. Wife of Robert de Stuteville of Lazenby, Cumberland
and mother of Hawise de Stuteville, wife of Hugh de Morville (d. 1202)
of Burgh-by-Sands, Cumberland.

Alice de Murdac, sister of Ralph de Murdac. Wife of John Deincourt (d. 6
Nov 1183) of Blankney, Lincolnshire.

Juliana de Murdac. Wife of Thurstan de Montfort (d. bef. 1190) and
mother of Henry de Montfort (d. 1199), ancestor to the Montforts of
Beaudesert, Warwickshire.

Any clarification or extension is appreciated.

MGH has an article on Murdacs. I will try to find the exact citation.

2. Geoffrey Murdac.

I believe CP is the source for this. Somewhere in the back of my mind,
I seem to remember that she was burned for murdering her husband. This
is not definite :-)

[1] Henry Murdac, Archbishop of York 1147 – 1153
(Consecrated December 1147; obiit 14 Oct 1153)

[2] In the Pipe Roll for Michaelmas 1166 is an entry under the

(Pipe Roll 12 Henry II, p.48 : Eyre of Earl Geoffrey de Mandeville and
Richard de Luci the Justiciar.)

The name of Murdac occurs in the Pipe Rolls, Curia Regis Rolls (& Rot. Cur. Regis)
and elsewhere in connection with East Yorkshire in the reigns of
Henry II - John; but I only took note of it a couple a times when it occurred
in connection with my area of interest.

You might well find the name Murdac in the indexes to the volumes of
Early Yorkshire Charters.

If Henry's original letter re Murdac was posted to the group then I seem to
have missed it. The result is that I don't know the names of those about
whom he was enquiring. There is, however, a good coverage of some Murdacs
in Farrer's *Honours and Knights' Fees* vols.II & especially III.
