According to CP, the father-in-law of Robert Darcy (d 1343) was one
Thomas Fitz Eustace of Woolsthorpe and Caswick, Lincolnshire.

As Tim Powys-Lybbe points out in his excellent site, this Thomas is
probably to be equated with the one of that name who has an entry in
Moor's Knight of Edward I.

The entry tells us the following:

Sir Thomas Fitz Eustace: de azure crusilly de or, a bend argent;
summoned against the Scots 1296, 1298, 1300, having £40 lands in
Lincs, and from Essex & Herts, 1301; Sheriff of Lincs, 1311; dead by
14.10.1318 holding Berewik manor in Staundon, a messuage and lands at
Shenley, Herts (sic), Willesthorp (sic) manor and lands there and at
Casewick, Lincs, leaving grandson and heir Thomas son of Thomas Fitz
Eustace, dower to widow Amice (sic), 18.1.1319 (CR); licence for her to
marry at will, 20.1.1319; wardship and marriage of heir granted to
Roger Damory, 6.2.1319 (FR).

We learn a little more about his wife/widow in the following PROCAT
reference:

SC 8/233/11633 (c1319)

Petitioners: Thomas de Grey.
Addressees: King.
Other people mentioned: Avice (sic), widow of Thomas Fitz Eustace, and
daughter of the petitioner; Thomas Fitz Eustace, late husband of Avice
Fitz Eustace; Robert de Bures; Roger Damory.
Nature of request: Grey requests the grant of his daughter's marriage,
he paying as much as any other, and that the king will command Bures by
his letters to take an oath from Avice not to marry without licence of
the king or Grey.
Endorsement: The king has granted this petition at the request of Lord
Roger Damory.

i.e. Amice Fitz Eustace was the daughter of Thomas de Grey.

The grandson and heir, also Thomas Fitz Eustace, was Lord of Shenstone.
He is mentioned in or connected to other contemporary records (e.g. SC
8/70/3494, which tells us that Berwick was the place of that name in
Hertfordshire; E 199/10/23 which refers to him thus: "Manor of Berwick
[in Standon] held by Thomas Fitz Eustace of Shenley [Bucks.]")

VCH Bucks, sub Shenley says this:

"There is no record of the subinfeudation of Westbury Manor in Shenley
until the reign of Henry iii, when it was held by Joan de Nowers.
Thomas son of Stephen had lands in Shenley about 1226, and may have
been related to Eustace son of Thomas, after whose death, Henry III
gave custody to Terry (Turricus) Allmain, in possession in 1278.
Thomas, son of Eustace or Thomas Fitz Eustace, who attained his
majority in 1284, received a grant of free warren in Shenley in 1292.
In 1320 he [sic, although it seems to me that it was his grandson and
namesake: MAR] obtained licence to have an oratory in his house at
Shenley, and in 1327 he settled the manor on himself and his wife Agnes
and their issue with remainder to his daughter Joan and her heirs. At
his death about 1341 his wife Agnes had the custody of their son
Thomas, aged thirteen. He evidently died without male issue, for at
Agnes's death in 1361 Shenley Manor passed to her son and heir John
Fitz Eustace, aged 22. John Fitz Eustace died in 1369, and his manor
was assigned in dower to his widow Christine. She afterwards married
Sir William Berland, to whom the marriage of Philip son and heir of
John Fitz Eustace was granted in 1385. Philip Fitz Eustace and his wife
Blanche enfeoffed (invested with the fee of an estate) Thomas Percy
Earl of Worcester and others of Westbury Manor. The intent was that it
should be reenfeoffed to them in fee simple, but the Earl of
Huntingdon, one of the feoffees, contrary to this order and without the
consent of his co-feoffees, enfeoffed Thomas Shelly, kt., at whose
execution and forfeiture in 1400 Westbury escheated to the Crown."

Thus we have:

1. Sir Thomas Fitz Eustace, born circa 1263; died 1318; married Amice,
daughter of Thomas de Grey. Issue:

2. Thomas Fitz Eustace, o.v.p; issue:

3. Thomas Fitz Eustace, heir to his grandfather, 1318; died circa 1341;
married Agnes, died 1361; issue:

4a. Joan Fitz Eustace, living 1327

4b. Thomas Fitz Eustace, born circa 1328; ospvm

4c. John Fitz Eustace, born circa 1339; died 1369; married Christine.
Issue:

5. Philip Fitz Eustace, living 1400; married Blanche.

Where does Joan, wife of Robert Darcy fit into this pedigree?

We know that Robert was born before 1297 (his father died in 1296) -
indeed he was Sheriff of Gloucestershire in 1313; his mother, Juliana,
is said by CP do have died before 15 June 1281, which would put his
birth to that date at the latest. It would seem most likely therefore
that his wife was the daughter of the first Thomas Fitz Eustace, born
circa 1263.

Some further particulars, from "The History & Antiquities of Hawsted"
by Sir John Collum (1784) and VCH Herts, sub Standon:

A. Thomas, married Joan, daughter of Thomas Noel. Issue:

B. Eustace Fitz Thomas, of Hawsted, Suffolk, Berwick in Standon, Herts,
and Caswick, Lincs; died 1272; married Joan Colville (living 2 Edward
II); issue:

C1. Thomas Fitz Eustace - vide supra; married Amice; father of Thomas,
Joan and:

D. Robert Fitz Eustace, inherited Hawsted and Codenham (near Boxford)
after his parents' death; issue:

E. Sir John Fitz Eustace, sold Hawsted, 27 Edward III; acquired Berwick
in Standon from his cousin after 1369; married Elizabeth; issue:

F. Elizabeth Fitz Eustace, married Robert Berland of Raithby, Lincs.

This pushes the Fitz Eustace line back a couple further generations.

Actually, we need to insert a couple of generations here, thus:

1. Thomas Fitz Eustace, married circa 6 Henry II Joan, daughter of
Thomas Noel; living 1198-1219 (Pipe Rolls of Richard I, John and Henry
III). Issue:

2. (? a son) - possibly Stephen, father of:

3. Thomas fitz Stephen, held manor at Shenley, 1226 (VCH Bucks), father
of:

4. Eustace Fitz Thomas, of Hawsted, Suffolk, Berwick in Standon, Herts,

and Caswick, Lincs; died 1272; married Joan Colville (living 2 Edward

7. Thomas Fitz Eustace, heir to his grandfather, 1318; died circa 1341;

married Agnes, died 1361; issue:

8a. Joan Fitz Eustace, living 1327

8b. Thomas Fitz Eustace, born circa 1328; ospvm 1349 (VCH Herts, sub
Standon)

8c. Agnes, quitclaimed rights at Shenley, 1403 (VCH Bucks); married -
Verdon

after his parents' death; issue:

7. Sir John Fitz Eustace, sold Hawsted, 27 Edward III; acquired Berwick

in Standon from his cousin after 1369; married Elizabeth; issue:

8. Elizabeth Fitz Eustace, married Robert Berland of Raithby, Lincs.

5b. Roger Fitz Eustace, presented as Rector of Hawsted by his mother
and brother, 1308

According to Eustace Fitz Thomas's IPM of 56 Henry III, his ancestors
had held Wivelsthorp, Lincolnshire "since the coming to England of
William the Bastard" (i.e. 1066).

I will post further particulars of the Fitz Eustace's descent from
earlier landowners at Hawsted separately.

"neptis" of Osbert, Sheriff of York; issue:

Hello Michael,

there's a bit about the fitz Eustace family of Shenley Brook End in R.
Ivens, P. Busby and N. Shepherd, Tattenhoe and Westbury; Two Deserted
Medieval Settlements in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire Archaeological
Society Monograph Series, 8 (1995), at pp. 205-6.

It's in the section covering the tenurial history of the manor of
Westbury, as historical background to the report of the excavations at
Westbury which form the greater part of the book. The fitz Eustace
references begin with 'by 1198 Thomas fitz Eustace (de Lisours) was
holding lands in Shenley Brook End ... (Feet of Fines 9 Ric. I, 11).
This Thomas also held lands in Lincs, Northants and Herts (Farrer 1923,
I, 1-2 and 51-3). Thomas (alias de Wilsthorpe) son and heir of Thomas
fitz Eustace had livery of his father's lands in Lincolnshire in 1223
...'. It then traces the family's tenure of the manor in some detail
down to the earl of Huntingdon's breach of trust in 1400, with many
references to sources which might provide further detail.

Regards,

Matt Tompkins

ODNB opines that William's mother and paternal grandfather are unknown,
although it speculates as to the identity of Herbert's wife (refuting
her identification as Emma of Blois; however)

I am a little troubled by the apparent chronology. St William of York,
ODNB says, was born no later than 1090, and died in 1154. It seems
unlikely to me that his male line great-great nephew (Thomas fitz
Eustace fitz Stephen) should have married circa 1160 - assuming
Cullum's date here to be correct. Does anyone have access to primary
or other trustworthy references showing the relationship between
Eustace Fitz Stephen and the Archbishop?

Many thanks, Matt and Tim. The "de Lisours" reference is interesting -
Sir Thomas Fitz Eustace is referred to as "de Liseres" in his Proof of
Age.

I will chase up the 1223 reference, although calling Thomas the son of
Thomas Fitz Eustace is apparently at odds with VCH Bucks sub Shenley,
which says in 1226 Thomas Fitz Stephen held, and provides primary
