Does anyone in the group have any information on the Sugden family of Yorkshire?
Later decendents of the family were Albert Sydney Sugden Born 31st October 1864 Edmonton, Middlesex and Henry Emanuel Sugden born 16th July 1859 Southgate, Middlesex. Both were English Cricketers.Any help would be appreciated.

In 1861, there were more than 2,300 Sugdens living in Yorkshire. In
1841, there were almost 2,000 of them. So we can't speak of "the Sugden
family of Yorkshire", because there were so many of them.

You can search for your above Sugdens for free on FindyMyPast.co.uk

Wikipedia has something on one of your cricketers:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Sugden

As to medieval Sugdens, have researched into that period yet?

I am myself descended from Sugdens and my father and his grandfather amongst others preserved the surname as a Christian name. However, as this is a medieval genealogy list, I shall focus on the origins.

The medieval farmstead or settlement of Shugden, in the township of Northowram, parish of Halifax lies at OS ref SE08783071. One William de Sugden appears in 1379, see J H Turner: "History of Brighouse, Rastrick and Hipperholme", Bingley 1893, p 103, cited in "West Yorkshire: An Archaeological Survey to AD 1500", vol 3, p 604.

This reference from Turner, where he in turn is quoting from the Wakefield manor court rolls (now held at the Yorkshire Archaeological Society in Leeds), recording the tourn of 24 Oct 1379 for the Brighouse graveship (covering Northowram), can be viewed at:
http://archive.org/stream/historyofbrighou00turn#page/102/

You will find a number of other interesting references to Sugdens from the 17th to 19th centuries in the same volume.

Thanks for the replys to my post. I am after the medieval genealogy of the Sugden family. I gave reference to the cricketers in case someone had knowledge of this particular branch from Yorkshire.

I am not aware of a nice published presentation of all the medieval Sugdens. It of course in part depends on how you define medieval of course. My own line comes at a later date from Keighley.

There are a number of Sugdens, under various spellings in the Halifax parish registers back to the 16th century, see “The Parish Registers of Halifax, co York, vol 1, Baptisms 1538-1593”, Yorkshire Parish Register Society, vol 37, 1910: http://archive.org/stream/parishregisterof37hali#page/n7/ and “The Parish Registers of Halifax, co York, vol 2, Marriages and Burials 1538-1593”, Yorkshire Parish Register Society, vol 45, 1910: http://archive.org/stream/parishregisterof45hali#page/n5/

You could also search the West Yorkshire Archive Service catalogue at http://catalogue.wyjs.org.uk/advanced.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog for Sugden but you will not find any documents earlier than the 16th century. However, you will note that there are a few abstracts of genealogical material for the family that have been made in the distant past. I have not checked these.

The principal source for the medieval genealogy is the Wakefield manor court rolls at the YAS but these have not all been published by any means and are very extensive (it was England’s largest and most populous manor). The manuscript collection is outlined at http://www.yas.org.uk/content/archives/courtrolls.html whilst those that have been published are listed at http://www.yas.org.uk/content/wake.html

The Medieval era spans a long time and Yorkshire is a huge county. For
those on the newsgroup with medieval Sugden ancestors, it might be
useful if you could give some names, dates and places.
