Maj. John Lowe died testate in Prince George's County, Maryland before 15 Jul 1701, leaving a will naming wife Rebecca (who was evidently the widow of a Wright when they married) as executrix and naming children Elizabeth, Alice, Eleanor, Rebecca and son John. His widow remarried to Thomas Mudd, son of Thomas Mudd and Sarah Boarman; an accounting of the estate of 5 Apr 1709 names the executrix as "Rebecca Mudd, formerly Wright, wife of Thomas Mudd" and notes that she is then deceased.

The 1711 will of William Hatton of Prince George's County leaves a legacy of "a gold ring of the value of ten shillings to each of my grandchildren"; an accounting of the estate shows payment of "one gold ring value 10s left as a legacy per the deceased's will" to Elizabeth (Lowe) Mudd (wife of Henry Mudd), Eleanor (Lowe) Miles, Barbara (Marbury) Frazier and John Lowe (Jr), thus establishing that the children of Maj. John Lowe are grandchildren of William Hatton; their mother Rebecca being deceased at the time William Hatton made his will she is not mentioned, but it is evident that the relationship must be through her.

William Hatton was the son of Richard Hatton, of Frodsham, Cheshire (brother of Thomas Hatton, secretary of the Maryland colony) and Margaret Domville, who remarried to Richard Banks in Maryland; Margaret Domville has at least two lines to Edward I (through each of his wives) through descent from Sir William Stanley (executed 1495).

Thank you for the information. I've known about that branch of my family tree for awhile, but didn't know about that.

You have alleged that Margaret Domville possess the two lines to Edward Ithrough her descent from Sir William Stanley (executed 1495).

Sir William Stanley had four known children, one legitimate son, William, Esq., by an uncertain wife; one illegitimate son, Thomas (living in 1517), by an unknown mistress; and two daughters of undetermined maternity and legitimacy, namely Joan (or Jane) (wife of John Warburton, Knt.) and Katherine (wife of Thomas Cocat).

It is doubtful that Sir William Stanley's last known wife, Elizabeth Hopton (who has two Edward I descents in her ancestry), was the mother of any of these children. My research indicates that Elizabeth Hopton was born about 1427 (she being aged 34 in 1461). Accordingly, she was aged about 44 when she married Sir William Stanley in 1471, and not likely to have borne him any children.

Since Margaret Domville descends from Joan (or Jane) Stanley, wife of John Warburton, Knt., whose maternity is unproven, you effectively lose the Edward I descents through the Hopton connection. But you retain one valid King Edward I descent from Sir William Stanley's mother, Joan Goushill.
