Hello All,
In response to my request for assistance last week with the will
of
Percival Skerne [1], Paul Reed was kind enough to respond. Together
with
valuable input from Chris Phillips, Paul abstracted the will, the full
text of
which is given below [2].
We know from the will of William Kelke, mercer of London (d.
before 28
June 1552) that 'Persevall Skerne' was the father of his wife Thomasyn
(or
Thomasine), and also a witness to the will (dated 16 June 1552) [3].
‘Persevall Skerne’ was a beneficiary of the will as well
as a witness.
That this is the same Percival Skerne has been confirmed as a
result of the information in these wills and elsewhere. A beneficiary
of
William Kelke’s will was ‘brother James Morle’ and
his wife; James Morle was a
witness of the will as well. One of the overseers of the will of
Percival
Skerne was ‘my sonne Marlowe’, obviously a son-in-law, the
husband of ‘my
daughter Marleye’. ‘James Morley of London,
merchant’ is identified in the
Visitation of London (1634) as the husband of ‘Anne Skerne,
daughter of a
London Fishmonger’ [4]. We can therefore identify ‘brother
James Morle’ as a
son-in-law of Percival Skerne, fishmonger of London, and
brother-in-law of
William Kelke, identified hereafter as James Morley.
As a result of the success concerning this will, and the
identification
of Percival Skerne as a fishmonger of London [5], I determined to
examine the
wills of ‘Symond Skerne, Fishmonger of London’ (1507) and
‘Robert Skerne,
Fishmonger of London ‘ (1534). Analysis of the abstracts of
these wills,
together with the will of William Skerne, clerk, of Melford, Suffolk
(1515)
[previously brought to Paul Reed's attention by John Brayton (another
Farrar descendant)], has proved that these individuals are in fact
related.
1. The will of ‘Roberte Skerne Citezen and Fysshemonger of
London’ is
dated 15 October 1521 [proved 7 Sep 1534]. Of the
will’s
provisions, those of particular relevance are as follows:
“ He gives each of his brothers and sisters living at
his
death 20 shillings
He gives to each of his brother Percivall's children then
alive 5 shilings
also to John Wolffe's children 5 shillings “ [6]
2. The will of ‘Symond Skerne fisshemong[er] and citizen of
london’
is dated 7 July 23 Henry VII (1507) [proved at Lambeth 13
December 1507]. A more significant abstract is given below,
but
the immediately relevant provisions include bequests “to
Robert
Skerne a sward [sword] that was my faders...to p[ar]cycall
Skerne xx s “, and the designation of
“ myn[e] executo[r]s : Whom I make and ordeyne Margery
my wif[e]
Robert Skerne citezen & fisshemong[er] and p[er]syvall
sup[er]viso[r] and ov[er]sear “ [7]
3. The will of ‘William Skerne Clerk of Melford,
Suffolk’ is
dated 20 April 1515 [proved 7 May 1515]. This will is
extremely valuable in identifying the interrelationships in
this family, as well as identifying their parents:
" And I wyll that he pray specially for my soule my Father
and my mother Rycharde and Issabell...and my brothern
and
sustren that be dep[ar]ted "
" Also I bequeth to my sust[er] Maude v m[ar]cs of the
residue
of the money that I promysed her to her mariage/ Also to
my
sustre Jone Wolf xx s of the money that is in my brother
percyvell['s] handis/ and xiij s iiij d among her
children
also the same and the other v nobles to hym self

Based on the evidence garnered from these sources, I have
prepared the
following pedigree of this famiy. Additional evidence is being
reviewed to
determine if other relationships can be identified, including the
families of
William Skerne of Kingston-upon-Thames (d. ca. 1464) and of Henry
Skerne of
Waltham, co. Lincs. (d. ca. 1506).

and was devisee of manors in Northants. in his mother's will in
1541.
His will, dated 26 March and proved 4 December 1558, states his
nephew
William Babington was to have the bringing up of his son Fowlke
Hasilwood, who was to go to University and then one of the Inns of
Court. Edward was son of Edmund Haselwood by his wife Jane
Chauntrell.

2. Thomas Morley, of London, merchant, m. Katherine Burnell, daughter of John
Burnell, of London, merchant.
3. John Morley, of London in 1634, but later to Cambridge, New England.
John Burnell married Anne Sebright, which John was son of John Burnell,
gentleman, of London 1570, by his wife Barbara Camberline, daughter of Peter,
of "Dansike" (apparently one of the merchants trading on the Baltic and with
Russia). John was son of Thomas Burnell, gent., of Dover, Kent. (This from
Vis. London, HS 15:123, 17:111.)
This material also occurs in Water's _Genealogical Gleanings in England_
1:79-81, 566-8, 796, 817; 2:877.
As to the Sebrights, Anne was sister of Sir Edward Sebright, of Besford and
Prestwood, Staffordshire, Baronet. The Vis. Worcs. gives the descent as
follows:
1. John Sebright of Blackshall.
2. Humfrey Sebright of Blacksall, m. Catherine Ridge, of Ridge, Staffordshire.
3. Edward Sebright of Blakeshall in Wolverley, Worcs., m. Joyce Grosvenor,
daughter of William Grosvenor of Bobbington/Babington, Staffordshire.
4. John Sebright (younger brother of William, who was town clerk of London
1573-1612 and d. 1620), of Blakeshall, m. Anne Bullingham, daughter of Richard
(m. 2 Thos. Walsh).
5. Anne Sebright, m. John Burnell of Stanmore, Middlesex.
