Wrotesley in His Pedigress from the Plea Rolls, p.229, gives from Joan
back to Hugh who is supposed to have married Alice de Audley. This Hugh
is given as marrying a Hawise. His source is a De Banco roll of Hillary
term, 4 Hen 4 (1464), membrane 307.
Then the Coll. for a History of Staffordshire (Wm Salt Soc.), 1917/18,
pp. 72-3, gives concerning Sir Hugh, "Born c. 1300; son and heir of Sir
Hugh M. of Hintes and Langley, M.P. Derbyshire 1324, 1332 9D. 1333,(5)
by Jane,(6) daughter and heiress of Robert de la Ward of Kingsley. He
married (1) by 1333, Ida, (7) the mother of his heir; (2) Alice daughter
of Nicholas, Lord Audley, and widow of Ralph Basset, eldest son of Ralph
B., Lord Basset of Drayton. She was the mother of the last Basset, Lord
of Drayton, and by her Meynell had a son Thomas. (8)"
(5) C.R. [Close Rolls, unspecified]
(6) "Hawise," Geneal. N.S. XV 91. [This citation is to Pedigrees from
the Plea Rolls which were published in The Genealogist before being
published as a volume]
(7) P.R. [Patent Rolls, unspecified]
(8) S.C. XII 27 [William Salt, Collections,]
The d. 1333 is apparently a misprint, because p. 73 says," He died 1363,
leaving his son Richard aged 30 or more. (5)"
(5) IPM, unspecified.
Then I have that the grandfather of the Hugh who married the de la Warde
married Philippa Savage, dtr. of Geoffrey Savage of Hintes, not of
Thomas Ednesore. Her sister Lucy Savage is supposed to have married
Thomas Ednesore.
I do not carry the line any further back and I, personally, do not trust
anything that Burke says.
