Hello all. I believe that Peter Woolley (born 24 March 1732; died unknown date to me), who married Hannah Potter (12 Feb. 1730 to 6 Sept. 1769) and who lived in Dutchess County, was a brother to Lydia Valeriah Woolley (1737 to 1813) who married Zephaniah Howard and to Pontius Woolley (1739 to 1814) who married Content Palmer. Peter and Hannah had a son named Pontius Woolley who was born on 27 Feb. 1763. Peter, Lydia Valeriah, and Pontius were the children (according to my reckoning) of Edward Woolley and his wife Lydia "Lida" Stelle.
Edward Woolley was, I believe a son of William Woolley (1662 to 1718) and his wife Anne West. Lydia Stelle (born 1709; died after 1739) was a daughter of Gabriel Stelle (1685 to 1738) and his wife Elizabeth Woolley (1685 to 1723). The parents of Elizabeth Woolley were Edward Woolley (1655 to 1729) and Lydia Allen (1660 to 1732).
Edward Woolley (1655 to 1729) and William Woolley (1662 to 1718) were the sons of Emmanuel Woolley (1625 to 1681) and his wife Elizabeth Freeman (1631 to 1720) of Newport, Rhode Island.
Gabriel Stelle was a son of the French immigrants Pontius Stelle (Poncet de L'Estoile), Sieur de Lorieres and his wife Eugenia Le Gereau who settled in Monmouth County, New Jersey. As you can see, this is the source of the Christian name PONTIUS which was passed down amongst the Howard and Woolley descendants,
I would think that perhaps all the Woolleys born in Dutchess County in the 1730s and 1740s were the children of the above Edward Woolley and his wife Lydia Stelle.

I have Phebe Wooley, b: 1766 in New York, (m: Philip H. Hoag in New York) Phebe was the daughter of Jehu Wooley, b: 1712?? to Edward Wooley and Lydia ?? Would this Edward and Lydia be the same as the Edward and Lydia you mentioned?
I got much of my information from Quaker Records, Nine Partners Meeting.

Hello,
I was just looking a my makeshift family tree (I used Excel) and found a Content Woolley b 12 Dec.1711 as a daughter of Thomas Woolley and his wife Patience _____. I have her married to Daniel Clayton or Cleayton.. Their daughter Mary b. 1735 married Daniel Stockton. DNA matches on Ancestry have given me some reinforcement. Some other references have shown Thomas and Patience as Quakers. If anyone has anything additional for either of them I will be appreciative.

Hello Dale,
I have the booklet compiled by David A. Woolley of Orchard Park, NY called "Woolley/Wooley Family Notes from the Trella May Hall Collection", located in the Archives at the New England Historic Genealogical Society.
>From the reading of the material therein, it appears that Edward Woolley (born 1692), the son of Edward Woolley and his wife Lydia Allen married his NIECE Lydia "Lida" Stelle (1709 to after 1739) about 1725, daughter of Gabriel Stelle (de L'Estoile) and his wife Elizabeth Woolley. This is what is known as an Avunculate marriage (aunt marrying a nephew & uncle marrying a niece) which was legal at the time in New Jersey. Children of Edward and Lydia were:
Jehu (1726 to 1812) who married Phobe Wooley of Shrewsbury;William (1730 to 1817);Peter (1732 to unknown) who married Hannah Potter;Abel (1734 to 1826) who married Mary Carter;Lydia Valeria (1737 to 1813) who married Zephaniah Howard; andPontius (1739 to 1814) who married Content Palmer (1749 to ca. 1813)

I like your theory. I have been struggling with the ancestors of Peter Woolley b. 1767 Duchess Co. died in Hanover, Chautauqua, NY. What sources do you have for it?

My Peter Wooley is related to Nehemiah Woolley of Duchess most closely since he has a son named the same. Do you know how the forenames Tilton and Nehemiah fit into the Woolley's?

Thanks!
