Dear Brom, Richard, Dave, Doug, Leo, Ian, Rosie, Tim, et al.,

In connection with the descent previously given from Edward I
of England, via Bosvile, Symmes and Lacy of Brearley to the
emigrant William Farrar, I recently noted the following derived
from the IPM of Hugh Lacy, Esq. of Brearley, co. Yorks. :

' Sutcliffe lists among other property of Hugh Lacy
given in his Inquisition Post Mortem, in 1573, besides
Brearley Hall, a number of other estates, messuages,
etc., part of the Manor of Midgley, messuages in
Brearley, the Manor of Cromwell Bottom and other lands
in Southowram, one-sixth of the Manor of Ethesthorpe,
lands in Northowram and Stanfield; also the Manor of
Wakefield in Socage. ' [1]

Most of the above holdings can be traced to earlier marriages
of the Lacys (incl. Brearley, from Soothill) or from Hugh Lacy's
own marriage to Agnes Savile (the lands cited in Stanfield likely
from her maritagium). "Ethesthorpe" is clearly a slight mispelling
of 'Etherthorpe', the rendering ca. 1822 of Edderthorpe [2].

The reference to Hugh Lacy's tenure in 1573 of "one-sixth
of the Manor of Ethesthorpe" supports the earlier descent given
from Bosvile of Ardsley, and (while not conclusive proof in
itself) supports the notion that Margaret Bosvile brought a moiety
- likely half - of the manor of Edderthorpe to her marriage with
William Symmes, ca. 1475-1480.

Should anyone have access to the text of Hugh Lacy's IPM of
1573, or a reference as to where this has been published (assuming
in fact that it has been published previously), that information
would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

John *
