Hello All,

The account given in Complete Peerage concerning the career
of Robert, 3rd Lord Clifford is thinly documented (as was true
of the first volumes of CP). With regard to his death, it is
stated that

' He d. 20 May 1344, aged 38. ' [1]

In fact, he died at some date on or prior to 1 April 1343.
This is evidenced by the grant of the marriage of his son and
heir Robert (4th Lord Clifford) by King Edward III, dated at
Westminster, 1 April 1343:

' Whereas Robert de Clifford and Ralph de Nevill arranged to
contract espousals between Robert firstborn son of the former
and Eufemia daughter of the latter and the said Robert de
Clifford, who held of the king in chief, deceased before his
son was old enough to consent to the marriage; the king
grants that Ralph shall have the marriage for the use of
Eufemia, notwithstanding that by the death of Robert the
custody of the said son and heir and his lands by reason of
his minority have come into his hands. ' [2]

The marriage of Robert de Clifford and Euphemia de Neville
did eventually take place, but given he o.s.p. and was
succeeded by his brother Roger (5th Lord Clifford) there are
no descendants of this marriage.

Cheers,

John *
