Dear Newsgroup ~

Complete Peerage 5 (1926): 325 (sub Ferrers) has a good account of the
life history of Walter Devereux, K.G., Lord Ferrers of Chartley (died
1485). His 2nd wife, Jane, is now known to have previously been the
widow of Thomas Ilam, mercer and alderman of London [see S.L. Thrupp,
Merchant Class of Medieval London, 1300–1500 (1948): 350]. Following
Walter Devereux's death, Jane married several times again. Complete
Peerage shows that Jane married her last [5th] husband, Thomas Poyntz,
sometime "before 31 May 1502."

My research indicates that Jane and Thomas Poyntz were actually
married before 11 June 1500, as proven by an abstract of an
inquisition taken on that date which appears in the journal,
Transaction of the Bristol & Gloucestershire Archaelogical Society, 6
(1881–2), pp. 148-149.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah

Douglas,

For one horrible second I thought you might have been giving us (and
particularly me) something worthwhile. But alas!
Seeing as the discovery of the maiden name of the illustrious Jane has
pre-occupied me over the last three years, maybe you might use your
available resources to find who she was? I have a reasonably good idea, but
no proof.
Would you be kind enough to quote the article in full please?
Incidentally Thomas and Jane both lived beyond 19 Oct 1520, a fact which
extends their marriage a little in the other direction.

From abstract of Will of Sir Robert Poyntz 19 Oct 1520
Feoffees and Recorders of and in my manor of Alderley and advowson of the
same, and in a messuage in Tresham, called Westcote, and all messuages,
lands &c. in Alderley for the use of my brother Thomas Pointz during his
natural life, without any thing paying therefrom. If my Lady Ferrers wife
of my said brother should die then, &c.
My brother Thomas Poyntz . . . . to be executors

Thomas Poyntz provided for them in their declining years. One imagines that
Jane would have had enough income from the estates of her previous husbands
to enable a comfortable existance. For a girl from the backblocks she
certainly carved a distinctive niche for herself in late 15th century history.

If anyone reading this is interested in Jane, the mother of Margaret Ilam
Poyntz Reynesforth (Rainsford) please follow this thread up thru the list as
I'd really like some assistance.

Best Douggie,

Tony Ingham
