"Johne Dykonson, Freeholder, Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, d 1316; m 1260
Margaret, daughter and heiress of Thomas de Lambert and Margaret daughter
Sir Walter de Calverley. Inherited the "Well-Close" in Hull, in the
Lambert family for seven generations."

Freeholder means that under the Yorkshire adoption of the Danish system,
Johne Dykonson may have owned a cottage and barely enough to grow food for
his family, or alot of land. Several things accounted for how much land
was parcelled out to each free person under the Viking rule. Of course,
anything shaped what any individual came to hold after that. Johne's son
and grandson married into wealthy merchant families, which may or may not
be the beginning of the family as a merchant family. I think Hugh
Clitheral, who was one of them, may also have ties to the De la Poles!

I know I have heard a LOT about this Lambert family; in fact, I have seen
alot of Lambert royal connections. I don't know if there was just one
Lambert family; it sounds like a Saxon personal name. Like Aethelbert and
Robert. (I believe Robert is actually a Norman name.)

Can anyone give me more information about the Lambert's of Hull, including
both their genealogy and their status. Also, does anyone know who was Sir
Walter de Calverley, and his lineage? From his title I take it he was a
knight, which means anything from he owned a horse and his armor, to he
was an important baron with considerable holdings of land and a castle or
two. (Robert II of Scotland married the daughter of such a knight.)

Yours,

Re: Lamberts

I assume that all your information is based originally on
the work "Record of the Lambert-Dickinson Family" by Wharton
Dickinson, published 1901.

George E. McCracken has described the 14-generation descent
of Nathaniel Dickinson as 'mostly rubbish'. So I suspect
that all the links that you hope to have with 'Johnne
Dykonson, Freeholder', with the Lamberts and with Walter de
Calverley are non-existent. Sorry to be the bearer of bad
news.

Although this is not my family, I have heard "the bad news" before.
Somebody on this list posted the reference for the TAG article with the
"bad news." Consequently, I studied this article and learned a lot
about my family that I did not previously know. The article also led me
to primary documents I did not know about. Thus, I think that it is
good news when people post the article or source of the "bad news."
There is a lot to learn in well researched and scholarly "bad news."
So, please, keep on posting those sources!! They can be a gold mine.
Thank you all,
Carole

I am one of the LAMBERTs collating the family history for the Web.
We
have quite a collection at the moment, but are always interested in
further details and information on any member of the family, or
variants
of the name.

I'm not familiar with the content of the LAMBERT-DICKINSON records,
although I know they are held at the SoG library. However, what we
hold
at the moment does not match with the Calverley link. The descent
from
Raoul, Count LAMBERT III of Mons and Louvain, who came over during
the
reign of the Conqueror, leads directly to Sir Edmund de LAMBERT,
nine
generations later, who marries the daughter of Lord and Lady
CALVERLEY
of Calverley.

===

The name LAMBERT seems to derive from the Old German for 'bright
land',
and it can be found back in the C7th with the martyr St LAMBERT of
Maastricht, who developed a cult following for a couple of
centuries.

The Calton Hall (Skipton, Yorks) branch of the family is one of its
UK
roots. Along with the Surrey branch in Woodmansterne, there is a
documented history which goes back to the C13th. Most records
between
the Conquest and the C13th are included in LAMBERT family histories
widely, but for over a century there has been a demand for the
evidence.
We know Henry de LAMBERT [floreat 1164.] was standard bearer to King
Henry II, which helpfully falls in the middle of the period of
uncertainty. Once you have the link back to Raoul, then the family
history goes back two centuries into Northern Europe.

Most of the spread of the LAMBERTs can be traced through the
Yorkshire
roots, which included the Major General John LAMBERT, one time
second in
command to Oliver Cromwell. They are the source of the long
established
LAMBERTs in Scotland, and supported David I in his claim and on his
throne.

We have outline information on LAMBERT families in Hull in the C7th
and
C19th.

I'll add details of our LAMBERT links in the signature file at the
end
for anyone who is interested.

I hope this helps.

With good wishes

Ian
