In a post on the 6 November 2003, John P. Ravilious listed the descent
of the d'Auberville family of Kent, including Clarice (wife of Sir Fulk
FitzWarin) as a daughter of Hugh d'Auberville and Joan. In a post on
the Tregoz family 8 November 2006, John lists the same Clarice as a
daughter of Robert d'Auberville and Clarice. Where does Robert fit into
the d'Auberville family?

I have searched the archives but cannot find the answer.

Thanks
Steve

Dear Steve,

There was a previous query that I received on the same subject the
other day. I have copied my response below, which provides the
solution.

Cheers,

John

The change in Clarice de Auberville's parentage was the result of
finding three pieces of evidence (some primary), as shown below.

1. I found record of a fine datd 23 June 1219, which gave Clarice
as wife of Robert de Auberville. This seemed more likely to
place him (vs. Hugh) as father of Clarice, wife of Fulk.

' Fine between William, abbot of Robertsbridge, and Robert de
Aubervill and Clarice his wife ' [HMC, Lisle MSS. p. 71, cites
Sussex Fines ap. Sussex Record Soc. II. p. 40]

2. I subsequently noted in the same work, a charter dated
ca. 1201-1205, witnessed by Hugh de Auberville and 'Robert
his brother':

' Charter of John of Eu, son of John Count of Eu, confirming to
Robertsbridge Abbey, for the souls of himself, his father and mother
and H. Count of Eu his brother, all their tenements, liberties and
customs in his fee in the Rape of Hastings,.... [including] The fee of
Waliland with its salt and with the salt which they have of the gift of
Hugh de Lunesford;....
Witnesses H. Archbishop of Canterbury, William, bishop of London,
John, bishop of Norwich, Gilbert, bishop of Rochester, Savaric, bishop
of Bath, William, Earl of Arundel, Earl Davi [com. Davi], Ralph Arden,
Hugh de Aubervill, Robert, his brother, William de Cyreton, Amfr. de
Dene, Ric. de Gosfeld, Hugh de Lunesford. ' [HMC, Lisle MSS. p. 60]

3. At about the same time, Doug Richardson found that Paget
(also referenced by Rosie Bevan in her post of last night/this
morning, in response to Will Johnson) had clarified Clarice's
descent earlier. I have copied part of Doug's posts below
for reference.

So, as it turns out, Clarice's parents were Robert de Auberville
(younger brother of Hugh, her 'former' father) by his wife Clarice.

Now, all we have to do (?) is find out who Clarice's parents
were;......

Cheers,

John
