Hello All,
Additional information has been found which will hopefully assist
in resolving the relationships between Master Roger de Arundel,
Thomas de Birkin and the others mentioned in this thread.
In J. Nichols' History of Leicester, there is an appendix of the
Segrave Cartulary which provides the Latin text for the following
charters [1]:
#145 Grant by 'Thome de Berkin' to Stephen de Segrave, of a
third part of 13 bovates of land in 'Pykewell' and
'Levesthorp'.
#182 Grant by William de 'Flemesburgh' of another third part
of the said 13 bovates.
#191 Grant by Nicholas de Anesty of another third part of the
said 13 bovates.
These manors can be readily identified as Pickwell and Leesthorpe,
co. Leics. It is highly likely that these were the properties (or
part of a larger group) inherited by Thomas de Birkin, Nicholas de
Anesty and 'Thome de Hothu' from Magister Roger de Arundel, and
further that the enfeoffment of Stephen de Segrave (d. 1241) in these
lands occurred between 1221 and 1230:
1. These charters are undated, but we know that Magister Roger
died before 19 June 1221 (see first message in this thread,
re: fine of that date by Thomas de Birkin and others).
2. Thomas de Birkin died before 21 November 1230, on which date
his sister Isabel and her husband Robert de Everingham fined
to have seisin of his lands [2].
3. The connection indicated between these lands, Thomas de Birkin
and Nicholas de Anesty, and esp. the fact that their individual
share were 1/3 of the lands in question, is a strong indicator
that Pickwell and Leesthorpe were their inheritance (or part
of same) from their relation, Magister Roger.
The addition of William de 'Flemesburgh' to this group is
interesting. It appears that this would be William of Flamborough,
co. Yorks., aka William 'le Constable', son of Robert fitz John of
Flamborough and grandson of John fitz Richard, constable of Chester
(d. 1190) and his wife Alice fitz Roger. If anyone would have
information concerning William de 'Flemesburgh' and his wife, or
mother, this would likely lead to a connection with 'Thome de Hothu'.
Also, if anyone has information concerning the manors of Pickwell
and Leesthorpe, and their earlier tenure, that may assist
significantly in resolving these relationships.
Good luck, and good hunting.
John

Dear Rosie, et al.,
Many thanks for an excellent post! In addition to resolving the Arundel
connection of the de Birkin, l'Enveise and other families, you have found the
Constable Connection, which identifies several additional generations and a
line
of descent from William de Arundel, of Foston on the Wolds, & c. to the
Constables of Flamborough.
The following gives several lines of descent from William de Arundel to
the
early generations of Everingham of Laxton, Constable of Flamborough and
Munchensy of Swanscombe. Should anyone have any further documentation re:
these generations, please let us know.
As always, any comments or criticism is welcome.
Cheers,
John *
