One source I have says Sir Richard married after 1338, to
Maud de Camville, widow of Richard de Vernon. Another
source I have says he married Isabel, daughter of Richard de
Vernon, of Haddon, co. Derby and Harleston, co. Stafford. I
have trouble believing the first version as Maud's son,
William, by her Vernon marriage was born about 1313, whereas
her son, Edmund, by Sir Richard Stafford was reportedly born
in 1344. The difference in ages between the two children is
too many years for Maud, widow of Richard de Vernon, to be
the mother of Edmund Stafford.
Does anyone know which version is correct? I suspect the
correct version is that Sir Richard de Stafford married
Isabel de Vernon, daughter of Richard de Vernon by Maud de
Camville. That fits the chronology much better.
Sir Richard de Stafford had three legitimate children,
Edmund Stafford (1344-1419), Bishop of Exeter, Thomas
Stafford (died prior to 1398), and Katherine Stafford
(married Thomas de Arderne). Sir Richard also had an
illegitimate son, Sir Nicholas, of Throwley, co. Stafford.
Any comments would be much appreciated. Best always,
Douglas Richardson
