Complete Peerage 6 (1926): 346-349 (sub Hastings) has a good account
of the life of John de Hastings (died 1313), 1st Lord Hastings. The
editor (pp. 347-348) states that John married (1st) Isabel de Valence,
daughter of William de Valence, sometime styled Earl of Pembroke. No
date for the actual marriage is given, however.
Recently, while I was going through the recently published volume,
Original Papal Documents in England & Wales (1198–1304), edited by
Jane E. Sayer (published 1999), I found an abstract of the
dispensation for the marriage of John de Hastings and his 1st wife,
Isabel de Valence, as follows:
pg. 351. Beaucaire, 1275 Jul. 15. Gregorius (X) <<venerabili fratri
.. archiepiscopo Cantuarien.>> Mandate to the archbishop of
Canterbury to dispense John, son of Henry de Hastings (Astinges), and
Isabel, daughter of William de Valence, lord of Pembroke, to contract
marriage although they are related within the third and fourth
degree."
As the dispensation correctly indicates, John de Hastings and Isabel
de Valence, were related in the 3rd and 4th degrees of kindred by
virtue of common descent from Sir William Marshal, Earl of Pembroke
(died 1219). I've provided a chart below to show the actual descent:
