Can anybody help me with information on Sir Richard de Molyns (also known as de Molyneux) born circa 1260. Was he a knight of King Edward I? Apparently he held land at Sefton and Dunlythlond (where is that?) and at Whitchurch in Hampshire. He was accused of homocide in Lancashire in 1281, but why and what was the result? Presumably he married as he had a son William in about 1290 but who was his wife? He probably died circa 1320, but what became of his descendants? Any information or leads much appreciated. Hello Amanda -

A significant amount of information on the Molyneux family of
Sefton can be found in a relatively new book, British Roots of Maryland
Families by Robert W. Barnes (Genealogical Pub. Co., Baltimore, MD 1999)

In abbreviated form, here is what I have (primarily from this
book, which I am matching against other sources such as Dr. Weis' Magna
Carta Sureties):

1. Robert de Molyneux, fl. 1100-1125, granted the manor of
Sefton by Roger of Poitou; received grant of land in
Down LItherland ca 1125 from Stephen of Boulogne

2. Adam de Molyneux [dispute over paternity]

3. Robert de Molyneux, m. Beatrix, dau. of Sir Robert de Villiers
of Little Crosby

4. Richard de Molyneux, appears in Pipe Roll of 1181/82; d. 1213

5. Sir Adam de Molyneux, m. Letitia de Brinley; d. after Oct 1246

6. William de Molyneux, m. Margaret, dau. of Sir Alan de
Thornton;d. before 1293

7. Richard de Molyneux, d. ca. 1320 (probably the Richard in your
query)

8. William de Molyneux, d. before 19 June 1336

9. Richard de Molyneux, of Sefton; manor of Down Litherland
_settled_ on Richard, his wife and sons, 1337; m. Agatha
(first wife, mother of William);d. 6 Apr 1363

10. William de Molyneux, of Sefton and Little Crosby, dvp 1 Oct
1358; m. Joan de Holland, dau. and heiress of Sir Robert de
Holland [some dispute over mother of #11]

11. Sir William de Molyneux, b. ca. 1345; heir to grandfather,
1363; m. Agnes; d. 1372

12. Richard de Molyneux, b. ca. 1368; m. Ellen de Urswick, dau.
of Sir Thomas de Urswick [ she later married Sir James
Harrington, then Sir John Savage]; High Sheriff of Lancashire;
d. 27 Dec 1397

13. Sir Richard de Molyneux, b. ca. 1396; m. Joan Haydock; fought
at Agincourt 1415 [made Constable of castle at Liverpool and
received other grants from Henry V for his valor]; d. ca. 1454

14. Sir Richard Molyneux, k. in Battle of Blore Heath [Lancastrian
side], 23 Sep 1459; m. Elizabeth Stanley, dau. of Thomas, Lord
Stanley

15. Sir Thomas Molyneux, Sheriff of Lancashire 1473; fought for
Edward IV against Scots at Berwick, 1482; m. Anne Dutton,
dau. of Sir Thomas Dutton, Lord Dutton and Anne Tuchet (desc.
of King of Edward I]; d. 12 July 1483

16. Sir William Molyneux, fought at Battle of Flodden against
the Scots 1513; m. Jane Rugge, dau. of Sir John Rugge;
d. 1548

Sir William left approx. 6 children, by whom he has a significant
number of descendants through the Hydes of Norbury, the Warrens of
Poynton, and others. I am currently trying to verify a connection with
the Hydes, which will establish my own descent from Sir William.

Please let me know if there are additional details you would
like - I will pass them on, or at least let you know if they are unknown
to me [there are probably others in the group with Molyneux connections
as well].

Good luck, and good hunting.

En droit devant [Molyneux of Sefton]

John
