Dear Newsgroup ~

The authoritative Complete Peerage, 12 Pt. 2 (1959): 169, footnote d,
indicates that Walter de Lacy, lord of`Meath, Ireland, and of Weobley,
Herefordshire, married Margaret (or Margery) de Brewes, daughter of
William de Brewes (or Briouze), [of Bramber, Sussex, by Maud, daughter
of Sir Bernard de Saint Valery, Knt.]. Complete Peerage mentions
Walter de Lacy is several places. However, there doesn't seem to be a
death date provided for either Walter de Lacy or his wife, Margaret (or
Margery) de Brewes.

My files notes indicate that Walter de Lacy died shortly before 24 Feb.
1240/1, he having gone blind before his death. I also show that his
widow, Margaret (or Margery), was living 25 June 1245. I believe the
information in my files is derived from the interesting article by H.
J. Nicholson entitled "Margaret de Lacy and the Hospital of St John at
Aconbury, Herefordshire," which appeared in the Journal of
Ecclesiastical History, 50 (1999) 629-651.

A more exact death date for Margaret (ro Margery) de Brewes, however,
is provided by J.S. Barrow in his recent work, Fasti Ecclesiæ
Anglicanæ, 1066-1300, volume 8 (2002): 101-128. This source includes
abstracts of the ancient obit book for Hereford Cathedral. This source
shows that the obit [anniversary] of Margery de Lascy' death was kept 6
March, year of death not stated:

"6 March viii B ii N. Obitus Margerie de Lascy que dedit quinque
solidos annui redditus distribuendos die anniversarii sui, canonicis
scilicet xl. denarios et clericis xx. Denarios.)." END OF QUOTE.

In footnote 83, the editor identifies Margery de Lascy in the obit
record as Margaret, wife of Walter de Lacy (he died 1241).

Thus, it would appear that Margaret (or Margery) de Brewes, widow of
Walter de Lacy, died 6 March, sometime after 1245.
