I possess copies of Parish Records (Canterbury and
Herne) pertinent to Joseph Bulkley, his family, and
relatives from the mid 1560s and later.

Joseph was a stationer/bookseller and a city
councillor of Canterbury. His PCC Will is dated 1642.

I also have the 1490 PCC Will of Thomas Bulkeley
(Woolwich and Sandwich Kent) who had agricultural land
in Woolwich, Plumstead, Eltham, and West Heath (North
West Kent).

I suspect and hope to discover a link that Joseph is a
descendant of Thomas. However I have had little
success finding public records of North West
Kent(1450-1570).

Has anyone any suggestion how to approach and resolve
this apparent lack of public records.

Thank you very much.

Paul Bulkley - Portland Oregon.

The best resource for early county history, particularly for
individuals, are the annual tracts of the county history societies, most
of whom were founded in the latter part of the 19th century. For the
county of Kent, this was the Kent Archaeological Society whose annual
publication, 'Archaeologia Cantiana', volume 1. was published in 1858.
Within such volumes one may discover Inquisitiones Post Mortem, Feet of
Fines, Churchwardens accounts, wills etc. and all the miscellanea that
makes research so pleasurable:) Where may be found these hundred or so
volumes? A good start would be the county record office. Academic
libraries of the major universities usually have the county histories on
their shelves. Stateside? Perhaps the New York City Library.

I note from a copy of the publication of the Surrey Arch. Soc.,
dated 1914, that subscribing societies in the USA were the Minnesota
Historical Society, the New England Historic Genealogical Soc., the
Smithsonian Institution and the Worcester Society of Antiquity
(America).

Failing any success with the above, It is possible that you may
require to hire a research assistant.

Mike.
