Dear Tony, Robert, et al.,

In the course of resolving the descent of the Trigott (or Trygott)
family of South Kirkby, Yorks. from William Symmes of Barnsley and his
wife Margaret Bosvile, I noted that among the coheirs was Anne, wife of
Thomas Thornhill, of Fixby, co. Yorks. (d. 1661). The SGM archives
indicate that you both were interested in Thornhill of Fixby, and
therefore I am forwarding this descent to you, and to the list. Via
Trigott of South Kirkby, the later Thornhills of Fixby have 3 identified
descents from Edward I of England - only one of which is shown below.
This should of course pale when compared to descents via the later
Fairfax and Wyvill marriages.

I note also this will impact other descents at this generation,
including Armitage/Armytage of Kirklees, as indicated. Hopefully this
will be of use to those interested in descents from Sir John Armytage
of Kirklees (d. 1676/7).

Should anyone have relevant comment, criticism or additional
documentation, that would of course be welcome.

Cheers,

John

Hello John,

I read through your data with great interest and wish to congratulate
you on the results of what must have been some intensive research.

My interest in the family centres around correcting all the
misinformation on the 'net (and doubtless published elsewhere)
concerning the descent from Bryan Thornhill ( -1484) up to John
Thornhill (1513-1567).

I'd be extremely interested to see your data for that period.

All the best,

Tony Ingham

Dear Tony,

Following is a 6-generation pedigree for the Thornhills of Fixby,
from Brian Thornhill (d. 1484) to the children of John Thornhill
(d. 26 Apr 1567). I had found that the pedigree of Thornhill of
Fixby and Riddlesworth in Foster's Pedigrees was largely accurate,
when compared to the documentation which include a few clear
statements as to relationships.

Please let me know how this compares to what you have, and as to
whether or not there is any disagreement, or additional documentation.

Cheers,

John

I don't know anything at all about the Thornhill family, John, and never
will, but I'm sure that your post below and the generosity behind it are
models of what SGM can & should be about.

Hello Peter,

I haven't begun to read John's mailing as yet, but I too thank him for
his prompt and thorough answer to my earlier query.

More's the pity that another on the list could not be as generous with
his data and time.

All the best,

Dear Tony,

Thanks for your kind words, and for the return of your Thornhill
information this morning.

The conflict re: the placement of Joan Catton/Calton, and of
Barbara Hopton, in the pedigree is an interesting one. It is
clear that William Thornhill had a wife/widow Joan at his death in
1443, as your extract (DD12/II/3/9/17 Part) shows below. ** I assume
where you wrote that you show "Joan de Catton as the mother of
William the father, rather than Bryan the son" that you meant "WIFE
of William the father" - the pedigree is complicated enough
already...........;) **

We can identify this Joan as Joan Catton (or de Calton), daughter
of John de Catton, as evidenced by the following extracts. These
also show that Richard Thornhill, at least, was her son.

2. Richard Thornhyll her son.

I do not as yet see an affirmative statement that Joan Catton was
the mother of Brian Thornhill, but it certainly is a possibility: it is
of course also possible that Brian was the son (or one of the sons) of
an earlier wife of William Thornhill. There is some slight evidence of
Brian being the son of Joan Catton, as Brian's great-grandson John held
at least a messuage in Catton in 1514, as shown in the following
grant:

1514 West Yorkshire Archive Service, Yorkshire Archaeological Society
DD12/II/23/9
Creation dates: 4 May 1514

Bradford and Byngley, in accordance with an agreement made between the
grantor and Thomas Cryce [sic].
Yorkshire Archaeological Society Yorkshire Deeds Vol. iv no. 214

I will see what else I can find re: the Hopton connection, as this
may yet resolve the matter (or part of it).

The Barlee connection is new to me, but I will see what I can find
in this regard as well. Identifying Elizabeth, wife of William
Thornhill (d. 1500) and John Barlee, would certainly be a nice step
(I would hazard she was a Chaunci, but that is a bit premature).

Cheers,

John

Hello John,

Thank you for your prompt reply to my mailing.

Hope you dont mind but what I have done is use your data as a template,
inserting my own data. There is a very good reason for this. I am a
painfully slow typist, two fingered and multi errored.

You will notice some additional info. at the end of the data which is
precisely why I was drawn to this family in the first place.

The Barlees are my most interesting ancestors.

I will mail you by separate post a copy of William Thornhill's will,
which I hope will be of interest to you.

Interestingly I have Joan de Catton as the mother of William the father,
rather than Bryan the son. But I do have Bryan's wife as Barbara HOPTON
(in brackets). The brackets signify extreme uncertainty.

Thanks once again. We will have to sort out our differences.

Regards,

Tony Ingham

Dear Peter,

Thanks for those kind words. I have found much benefit from what
others at SGM have shared over the years, and whatever I can contribute
in return, I'm happy to do so.

I just pray I never find that elusive relationship to Paris
Hilton .....

Cheers,

John

Hello John,

Sorry for the error. I meant that Joan de Catton was the _wife_ of
William the father rather than Bryan the son.

Whether she was the mother of Bryan is open to conjecture. As you say
she is certainly mother of Richard and subsequently the rest of the sons
at least.

One problem that confounds me is how that Joan can become wife of Bryan,
as if by default. See below.

The dates quoted by the Cambridgeshire Record Office at Huntington are
pretty awful.

20 May 15 Edward III. = 20 May 1341.

51 Edward III. = 25 Jan 1376/7 - 21 Jun 1377.

24 Henry VI. = 1 Sep 1445 - 30 Aug 1446.

Bit unusual that! Most of the Record Offices are right on top of these
things. There is a great little program called CALISTO which is the way
to go with dates.

The name of Barbara Hapton comes from all the entries I found on Google
with a "Brian Thornhill" search. No source material, but name her father
as Richard Hapton of Swillington. Another Google search of Hapton
Swillington gave nothing more.

I'm O.K. with the John Barlee - Elizabth, widow of William Thornhill
marriage thanks. Through lack of information to the contrary I assume
that she died soon thereafter, since Margaret POYNTZ is touted to be the
mother of John Barlee's heir, also John Barlee, born prior to 1512.

You will notice the Leventhorpe family involved with the Thornhills in
the early 15th century. The reason for this is that Margaret de Totehill
was married firstly to William de Riley (d. 1362).

Thus: Katherine de Riley the wife of John de Leventhorpe ( who came
south with Henry de Bolingbroke and ably served the early Lancastrian
kings) was the 'sister' of William de Thornhill.

G'day John,

Not all the gang, only three.

Must admit he seems to be a bit gob-smacked. He hasn't replied to my
last mail yet!!!

Really glad to see you were able to work out that we are all Aussies.

Dear Tony,

I was hoping to go through my notes re: any Hapton/Hopton documentation,
but did not have a chance. Given the Catton marriage error, one wonders at
what generation this marriage in fact occurred.....

I had noted the Riley/Leventhorp link, which the A2A site (Clarke
Thornhill I think) documents rather well. Still surprising sometimes when the
Foster pedigrees are found to be accurate (although this is not a continuous
result, to be sure).

Hopefully will be able to have a reasonable fossick around mid-week, and
will let you know what I do (or do not) find. Meanwhile, happy hunting in OZ.

Cheers,

John

I think the wrong John jumped on to the bandwagon. John Ravilious is the
_the_ John.

Well, we can certainly sort the wheat from the chaff. And I'm sure John
isn't dismayed.

Leo's message was in reply to one from Tony Ingham.

Hello John and everyone else - I've just got back on here after an
intensely busy work period that's kept me away. Sir George Armytage
(he of the Harleian Society), compiled a full genealogy of the Armytage
descent from Edward - I can't recall if he published it as a Harleian
volume or if it's in his personal notes here at Kirklees. I'll take a
look and report back. When I locate it, I'll post all the details,
though I'm afraid it will be in "raw" form as I don't have the time at
the moment to locate all the supporting documents. Generally speaking,
though, because of Sir George's commitments to genealogy and the
Harleian, his work tends to be as accurate as was possible in the early
20th century.

Best wishes

David
