Hello All,
At the same time that Andrew Stuart obtained a copy of the
dispensation for Robert Stewart (later King Robert II of Scots)
and Elizabeth Mure, he also secured a copy of that for Robert
Stewart and his subsequent wife, Euphemia of Ross.
The relevant portion of the dispensation text follows:
' INNOCENTIUS Episcopus, Servus Servor. Dei, Venerabili
Fratri.... Episcopo Glasguen. Salutem, &c.
EXHIBITE nobis pro parte dilecti filii nobilis viri Roberti
Stivardi Senescalli Scocie, ac dilecte in Xsto, filie nobilis
mulieris Eufemie, Comitisse Moravie, relicte quondam Johannis
Comitis Moravie vidue Glasguen. et Moravien. Dioc. petitionis
series continebat, quod ipsi propter sedandas guerras,
discordias, et inimicitias inter ipsum Robertum et dilectum
filium nobilem virum Gulielmum Comitem Rossiae, Rossen
Dioc. dicte Eufemie fratrem, et alios ipsius Eufemie
consanguineos ex interfectione cujusdam nobilis, et aliis
de causis exortas tractatum habuerunt super matrimonio
inter se invicem contrahendo. Verum quia ipsi Robertus
et Eufemia quarto consanguinitatis, et ex eo tertio
affinitatis gradibus invicem se contigerunt; quod dicti
Robertus, et Johannes dum vivebant erant tertio
consanguinitatis gradu conjuncti, matrimonium hujusmodi
contrahere nequeunt dispensatione super hoc Apostolica
non obtenta, .... ' [1]
The relationship between Robert Stewart and John Randolph (3rd
degree of consanguinity) is clear: in fact, there is likely a
double 3rd degree relationship, with John Randolph's father Thomas
being a nephew of King Robert _the_ Bruce (grandfather of Robert)
and his mother Isabel Stewart being a niece of James the Stewart
(paternal grandfather of Robert Stewart).
However, I show the relationship between Robert Stewart and
Euphemia of Ross as being 5th and 4th degrees of consanguinity,
as follows:
1) NN = William Comyn = 2) Marjory of
I E of Buchan I Buchan
__________I d. 1233 I____________
I I
William = Jean Comyn William = Elizabeth
E of Ross I E of Mar I

William, E of Ross (d. 1323) Donald, E of Mar (d. 1297)

Hugh, E of Ross = 2) Margaret Robert I = 1) Isabel
d. 1333 I Graham K of Scots I of Mar
I I
I Walter = Marjory
I Stewart I Bruce
I __________I

2) Euphemia = Robert (II) Stewart
of Ross K of Scots
Should anyone of the list have any information which reflects
a closer (4th & 4th) relationship, I would be most interested.
Also, I do not recall prior reference to such a dispensation,
in CP or elsewhere, or that Euphemia of Ross had been previously
married to John Randolph, Earl of Moray. I would be interested
to know if CP acknowledges same; if not, this should then be
another correction/addition to CP.
Good luck, and good hunting to all.
John *
