There are two lines that lead to close (of course, in the 15th century) in-laws of the Admiral. Those are (a) the direct descendants of Bartolomeu Pare4strelo, first of the name, lord of Porto santo, and (b) descendants of the Moniz family in the Madeira.

First line goes as follows (I just post the Brazilian portion of the line):

1. BARTOLOMEU PERESTRELO

1. BARTOLOMEU PERESTRELO.

B. at Lisbon, the son of messer Filippone Palastrelli, from Piacenza, attested in Portugal in 1437. Bartolomeu arrived at the Madeira with the Zargo and Tristan Vaz in 1419/20. Became the lord of Porto Santo (donation confirmed in 1446). M. first Beatriz Furtada de Mendoça, said to be the daughter of one Afonso Furtado. M. second (or had a common-law marriage) with Isabel Moniz, probably the sister or half-sister of Vasco Martins Moniz who settled in the Madeira c. 1450.

Issue, first marriage:

-----2. CATARINA FURTADA DE MENDONÇA
Primogênita, do primeiro leito. C.c. Segue.

2. CATARINA FURTADA DE MENDONÇA
First-born, m. Mem Rodrigues de Vasconcellos, said to be the brother of Martim Mendes de Vasconcellos (according to the lineage books), the one who m. Helena Gonçalves da Câmara, the Zarco's daughter; Martim still alive in 1470, when he witnesses his father-in-law's will. There is doubt about their paternity, but if we can identify this Mem Rodrigues to a same-named character among the Vasconcellos Alvarengas, they were the younger children of Joane Mendes de Vasconcellos, lord of Alvarenga in 1381, and of wife Isabel Pereira. Follows.

-----2. Outras filhas do primeiro leito: (i) Brites de Mendonça Furtada, c.c. João Teixeira, filho de Tristão Vaz, donatário de Machico. (ii) Hiscoa Perestrelo, c.c. Marriage, or cohabitation, with Isabel Moniz:

Prezado Francisco,

Thanks a lot for posting this. I have a couple questions and more info:

In your section near the bottom which reads:

>TROILO DE VASCONCELLOS
>M. Iria de Mello, d. of Diogo de Mello da Cunha and of wife... d. of Vasco
Gil Sodré [thanks, Doug Holmes!]; >gdaughter of Gaspar Dias de Arce and of
Brites, bastard daughter of Vasco Martins de Mello and of Isabel de
>Albuquerque.

The wife of Diogo de Mello da Cunha is Joana Vaz, whose parents are Vasco
Gil Sodre and Beatriz Goncalves de Bectaforte (named after the castle
Beaufort in England where Diogo Vaz Sodre, son of this same Vasco and
Beatriz, was married to Branca/Briolanja Correia da Cunha, daughter of
Pedro Correia da Cunha). My source on the location of that marriage in
castle Beaufort is the LDS Ancestral File and so until I have a better
source, that information is suspect.

Gaspar Dias de Arce was of Spanish origin (Asturias, to be more precise),
but born in Portugal, was the brother of Sancha Rodrigues de Arce, wife of
the famous Jacome de Bruges, the first colonizer of the ilha Terceira.

The wife of Gaspar Dias de Arce was Beatriz de Mello, but my data is not
that she is the bastard daughter of Vasco Martins de Mello and of Isabel de
Albuquerque. I haven't totally ironed it out, either (as if it is really
possible), but she is supposed to be the daughter of Alvaro Martins de
Mello (wife unknown or maybe non-existant), the brother of Pedro Vaz ou
Martins de Mello, the first conde de Atalaia in 1466 who died witout
legitimate issue (and no legitimized issue, either).

Now, here is where more of this big mess is. The father of Alvaro Martins
de Mello (not stated in F.Gayo) is supposed to be Goncalo Vaz ou Vasques de
Mello, the 2nd senhor de Castanheira and Izabel de Albuquerque. I believe
this is the same Izabel Albuquerque you say married Vasco Miz Mello. This
Izabel de Albuquerque is the daughter of Vasco Martins da Cunha, the senhor
de Pinheiro de Angeija, and wife Thereza de Albuquerque (descendant of
Portuguese royalty, as you know).
This whole link to Beatriz de Mello has been the subject of my recent
study. The main source I have for it is Historia Insulana. And frankly,
there are not really many other sources for this so remote ancestor of yours.

There could be some jumbled generations as I have it listed above. The ones
in biggest question are the parents of Alvaro Martins de Mello and his
brother the conde. One thing we know is that the conde was given that title
in 1466.

The reason for my study is the ancestors of Beatriz de Mello are my
ancestors, from her brother. According to Nobiliario da Ilha Terceira, she
is supposed to the the tronco/trunk of the Mello name on Graciosa. I think
her brother was the tronco on Pico for the surname Mello.

The second very interesting part is from your paragraph near the top:

>1. BARTOLOMEU PERESTRELO

My same source, Historia Insulana, gives Afonso Furtado as the father of
Beatriz Furtado de Mendonca, but then it is very vague about her
illustrious ancestors. It never gave her mother. So I am wondering if you
can remember your source for the name of Isabel Moniz as her mother. It is
the first time I heard this, not that I dispute it. I am very happy to
learn anything!

Finally, in regards Pedro Correia da Cunha, donatario of ilha Graciosa, I
know that in your book, "Os Herdeiros do Poder" and in your message today
that you stated his mother was:

>Pedro Correia da Cunha, sr. da ilha da Graciosa, filho de Gonçalo Correia,
sr. de Farelães, confirmado em 1411, e de s.m. Isabel Pereira de la Cerda.
(Isabel Pereira de la Cerda era filha de Martim Gonçalves de la Cerda, n.c.
1350, e de Violante Pereira, irmã do condestável D. Nun¹Álvares Pereira, e
c.1306 c. Leonor de Guzmán (Ýc. 1341)). C.g.

As you likely noticed, in some nobility sources, the mother of Pedro
Correia da Cunha is not listed. Perhaps in your source by H.H. Noronha, it
lists her as a Pereira de Lacerda. But in the book by historiador James
Guill "A History of the Azores Islands" is lists her as Filipa da Cunha.
Nobiliario da Ilha Terceira lists her as Branca Rodrigues Botelho. And
there is a Filipa da Cunha married to Fernao de Sa, according to F.Gayo.

Whether or not it is accurate, I currently have the parents of Filipa da
Cunha as Gil Vasques ou Vaz da Cunha, the senhor de Celerico de Basto, and
Izabel Pereira. This Izabel Pereira is also one of the 32 legitimized
bastard children from various women, only some of whom are named, of the
Prior de Crato, Alvaro Glz Pereira, as you know the father of the famous
Nuno Alvares Pereira. So the line is eventually the same in both our
theories, but the details are not the same.
Historiador Guill contends the mother of Pedro Correia da Cunha is the
sister of Joao Pereira da Cunha, who took the name Augustine as his own in
honor of the English knight he defeated by that name in the 1390 Knight's
tournament in England.

With all these conflicts, we realize we must go to actual source documents.
If you know where to find such evidence, I am all ears!

Finally, in keeping with your subject, do you have some ready info on the
netos of Cristoforo Colon? All I know is Diego sem mulher, whose daughter
was Izabel Colon de Toledo, wife of Jorge de Portugal (whose parents I am
also curisous about). But I have nothing more recent on that line.

Um abraco,

Doug
