Complete Peerage 9 (1936): 128 (sub Montfort) has a good account of
the life and history of John Montfort, 1st Lord Montfort of Beaudesert
(died 1296). Regarding his widow, Alice, the editor states that she
had dower in November 1296 and also that in 1303 she recovered the
manors of Preston and Uppingham against the heir.
My research indicates that Alice de Montfort was styled "kinswoman" by
Queen Eleanor of Castile [Reference: J.C. Parsons, Court and Household
of Eleanor of Castile in 1290 (1977): 41, 127]. In her widowhood,
Alice de Montfort presented William de la Plaunche, an acolyte, to the
church of Whitchurch, in 1296 and 1299 [Reference: G. Giffard,
Register of Bishop Godfrey Giffard 1 (Episcopal Regs., Dioc. of Worc.)
(1902): ccxl]. Alice was still living in Easter term, 1309, when
William Morin of Kineton, Warwickshire was attached to answer Alice,
widow of John de Montfort, "concerning a plea why with force and arms
he entered the castle of the same Alice at Beaudesert and took and
carried away her goods and chattels found there to the value of one
hundred shillings." [Reference: M.S. Arnold, Select Cases of Trespass
from the King's Court 1307-1399 (Selden Soc. 100) (1985): 126-127].
