I could use some help with tracing the above Elizabeth back in time. I have
seen various websites that state she was the daughter of Thomas Newdigate,
and a female Vavysor. Thomas is listed most of the time with a birth year of
1520, and death in 1559. The sites listing him with a wife surnamed Vavysor
show here dying, and him remarrying to Jane Parker about 1558.
The will of Thomas Newdegate that died in 1559 mentions daughters Elizabeth,
Barbara, and Dorothy, and a son Thomas. Also listed is a brother in law, and
a nephew both named John Flynn (the surname is hard to read, and I may have
the wrong name). The will mentions his wife Jane, and his sister Anne. I am
guessing she is the one married to John Flynn. Thomas also mentions in his
will "my wifes brother John Savage, and also Thomas Savage. Again, the script
in the will is hard to read, and the name may be different. Does someone have
a copy of this will, and able to read the script?

Going from the Surrey Visitations of 1530, 1572. and 1623, the line goes
from Elizabeth Poyntz (nee Newdigate) back thru Thomas/Katherine Hampden, then
to Walter N/Isabella Hampden, then to Thomas N/Alice Paul, then to John, then
to Thomas. Since the first Visitation is done in 1530, I believe the
ancestry of Walter is most likely correct, since he is still alive, or recently
deceased. Does anyone have a death date for him?

The one minor problem I have with the Newdigate line is the ages of Walter
and his son Thomas. Walter seems to have been born about 1474, married about
1500, but Thomas seems to be born in 1520. While this is very possible, it
seems to be pushing the boundaries a bit.

Can anyone help me with this family?? Any corrections, verifications, etc
would be most welcomed.

Ken

Which Poyntz did she marry? William of Reigate, Surrey, m. 23 May 1569?

If she is the Elizabeth who m. William Poyntz, then her ancestry is
given in "The Ancestry of Dorothea Poyntz" by Ronny Bodine and the
late Thomas W Spalding which was obtainable from The Owsley website:

http://www.owsleyfamily.org/

I suspect it is out of print but they may be able to direct you to
second-hand copies.

However if I have identified Elizabeth Newdigate correctly, her mother is
given in this book as Katherine Hampden.

The rest of my comments assume I have identified Elizabeth Newdigate
correctly.

I think the birth dates are guesses.

Katherine Hampden was the daughter of Sir John Hampden and Elizabeth
Savage. Elizabeth had a brother Sir john Savage.

No. And the above book doesn't either; the references they give for him
are the Visitation and John Maclean's "Memoir of the Family of Poyntz"
and neither of those have his death either.

I think all these dates are guesses. Never believe web-sites, not even
the one below.

The Owsley Society are, almost certainly, the people: they have done
some excellent research.
