Dear John

Thank you very much indeed for the further proof of the marriage of William
Clifton d 1564 & Elizabeth Blount.

The Visitation of Nottinghamshire is also helpful in this regard, referring
at page 18 to the same marriage and calling Elizabeth a daughter of Thomas
Blount of Sodington, Co. Worc.

The connection to the Blounts of Sodington looks plausible, however I am
still looking for evidence of it from a primary source.

The will of Thomas Blount, of Sodington dated 19 Dec. 1562 was proved at PCC
18 May 1563. Unfortunatly he doesn't refer there to his daughter Clifton.
The brother of this Elizabeth, Walter wrote his will on 7 Sept. 1590 (Proved
at PCC 3 Nov. 1590), however frustratingly he doesn't refer to a sister
Clifton either or any Clifton relatives either.

The Clifton/ Blount connection is worth proving as if it is correct
Elizabeth Blount will bring to the Cliftons two lines to Edward I, one shown
as follows:

Edward I
/
Elizabeth of England = Humphrey de Bohun
/
Eleanor de Bohun = James Butler
/
Pernel Butler = Gilbert Talbot
/
Richard, 4th Baron Talbot = Ankaret Strange (desc of Edward I)
/
Alice Talbot = Sir Thomas Barre d 1441
/
Elizabeth Barre d 1468 = Edmund Cornwall d 1435
/
Thomas Cornwall = Elizabeth Lenthal
/
Sir Edmund Cornwall d 1498 = Maria Hoord
/
Anne Cornwall = Peter Blount of Sodington d 1529
/
Thomas Blount of Sodington d 1563
/
Elizabeth Blount = William Clifton d 1564

I note also that John Nelson, the immigrant to New England, was an ancestor
of US President Franklin Roosevelt ans presumably many other American
citizens. There may therefore be some interest from some of our American
cousins on this newsgroup in establishing the Clifton/ Blount link for
certain.

Thank you for your interest.

Regards
Robert

For what it's worth, the Clifton-Blount marriage is also noted in:

George William Marshall, [ITAL:]The Visitations of the County of Nottingham
In the Years 1569 and 1614[:ITAL], Vol. IV, p.17-18 (London: The Harleian
Society, 1871)<, [CD]>. Hereinafter cited as [ITAL:]V-Nottingham
1569/1614[:ITAL].

You may have had the reference already.

Cheers,
Kevan
