40 -- Through 1871, Edward Thomas Glassborough is described in the UK
Censuses as a "Messenger", usually a messenger for a marine insurance
firm, and as living in Shoreditch, near London. In the 1881 Census, he
is a prisoner in Holloway Prison, Islington, described as an
"Insurance Co's Messenger", while his wife and children are enumerated
in St. Leonards, London. To date, no record has been found to show
what he was convicted of, or when. In the 1891 Census, he is
enumerated with his wife and children at Leyton, co. Essex, and he is
then described as "living on own means". He died at Leyton in 1898.

48 -- His sister Sophia Goldsmith married Henry Hickmott, and in 1849
Henry and Sophia emigrated to Australia. See
http://homepage.mac.com/g.cheeseman/henryhickmott.html for further
details.

68 -- Asquith is too common a surname in Yorkshire for facile
assumptions about a relationship with:

Some of the less accurate news reports refer to this Darnton Lupton,
Mayor of Leeds in 1844, as "an earlier ancestor" of Kate Middleton. He
is not an ancestor of hers, rather he is her great-great-great-great-
uncle, an older brother of her great-great-great-grandfather.

145 -- Her baptism (18 May 1753) was attended by a relative named
Joseph Ryder (1695-1768), who recorded the event in his spiritual
diary. After Joseph's death, Olive and her descendants inherited the
diary (41 volumes, some 14000 pages). More recently, Olive's great-
grandson Edgar Lupton (1867-1957) donated the diary to the John
Rylands Library, in Manchester, where it remains today. See Margaret
C. Jacob and Matthew Kadane, "Missing, Now Found in the Eighteenth

grandfathers was a child of Huguenot refugees, and one of her great-
great-grandfathers was a child of Scottish parents, thus her ethnic
ancestry (as far as is currently known) can be shown as:

FURTHER NOTES

One of Kate Middleton's great-great-great-grandfathers, Francis Lupton
(number 36, above), was baptized at the Call Lane Arian Congregation
in Leeds. His ancestors, for many generations, had been members of non-
conforming churches, usually Arianist (now a part of Unitarianism).
His marriage to Frances Elizabeth Greenhow, also from a long line of
non-conformists, was performed according to the rites of the Unitarian
Church.

After the Restoration (in 1660), a series of Parliamentary Acts,
collectively called "the Clarendon Code" (after the Lord Chancellor,
Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon), re-established episcopal rule in the
Church of England. One of these Acts was the 1662 "Act of Uniformity",
which required episcopal ordination for all Church of England clergy,
and made the use of the Book of Common Prayer compulsory in religious
services. Some 2000 clergy refused to comply with this Act, and were
as a consequence ejected from their livings. At least three of Kate
Middleton's ancestors, Benjamin Fairfax (number 4820 above), Henry
Finch (number 2404 above), and John Meadows (number 1204 above), were
ejected in 1662 for non-conformity.

In more recent generations, Kate Middleton's ancestors conformed to
the Established (i.e., Anglican) Church. In particular, the weddings
of her parents and of both sets of her grandparents were performed in
the Established Church. The wedding of her patrilineal great-
grandparents, Richard Noel Middleton to Olive Christiana Lupton, was
performed by the rites of the Unitarian Church.

FURTHER NOTES

In Hobbs (full citation below), on p. 13, F. M. Lupton cites a
pamphlet William Davenport, of Reading, and his descendants, by Rev.
James Davenport, which claims that this William Davenport of Reading
(number 636, above) was the same person as the William Davenport born
at Worfield, Shropshire, on 24 Feb. 1679, a younger son of Henry
Davenport of Hollon, Shropshire, by his wife Elizabeth Talbot.

Rev. James Davenport appears to have written several different works
on William Davenport of Reading, as a correspondent refers to a
publication by Rev. James Davenport, Rector of Harvington in
Worcestershire, titled The Davenport Family of Reading and Welford on
Avon, and printed in 1923 (long after Hobbs was printed). About the
identification of William Davenport of Reading with the William
Davenport baptized at Worfield, the correspondent states that the
author "concludes that insufficient evidence exists to establish such
a connection beyond a reasonable doubt."

If this identification is correct (the IGI treats it as correct), then
Kate Middleton's ancestry can be extended as follows:

SOURCES CONSULTED AND CITED

This webpage was built as an experiment. The experiment was (in
effect) to take some random person born in the UK in the next-to-last
decade of the 20th century CE, and determine that persons' ancestry
based on two sources:
The UK civil birth, marriage, and death registrations, and
The UK decennial census.
Other sources (listed below) were used when appropriate and available,
but the two mentioned above were the basis of this work.

to a "pedigree" refer to the large fold-out pedigree at the end of the
book.
