I am looking for information about the parents and ancestors of
Robert Camel and Joan de Plecy of Shapwick, Dorsetshire, England. They
were married in about 1410. They had a son named John Camel, who
married Isabel (surname unknown) in about 1438.

Can anyone identify their parents and forebears? I have seen various
alternative spellings for both Robert's and Joan's surnames.

Hi Shawn:

Do you have a descent from Robert and Joan (Plecy) Camel? If so, then
you have a meandering medieval descent from Charlemagne through Joan
Plecy's ancestry. I've been looking for colonists who have the Camel
line in their ancestry. What can you tell me about your descent?

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah

Douglas,

Thanks for your reply. I would be interested in your information about
Joan de Plecy's ancestry.

Here is what I have on her descendants to Thomas Poindexter of
Virginia. I am sorry I do not site original sources; much of this
information was taken from a compiled genealogy of George Poingdestre,
who settled in Virginia in the early 1600s.

Notes for GEORGE POINGDESTRE:
Payne's "Armorial of Jersey" lists George as son of Thomas Poingdestre
with the anotation that he settled in Virginia.

March 15, 1657. George Poindexter and George Thompson received a grant
for 350 acres in Gloucester County, Virginia at the head of Eagle Nest
Creek in Milford Haven, adjoining the lands of Richard Long and
Conglins. (The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, vol. xix,
no. 3, p. 326)

January 8, 1667. George Poindexter and Otho Thorpe purchased 850 acres
at Middle Plantation from Edward Wyatt and wife. This purchased
constituted the exact area whereon the present town of Williamsburg now
stands. (William and Mary Quarterly, (1), vol. xii, p. 38)

April 1673. A court granted a certificate to George Poindexter for the
importation of certain persons into the colony--among them was Susannah
Poindexter.

Before 1680, George Poindexter removed to the present New Kent County,
Virginia.

About 1685. George Poindester built the remarkable brick and timber

Abt. 1752 in Louisa County, VA.

Notes for THOMAS POINDEXTER:
Thomas' father began to use the Latin (Poindexter) form of his French
(Poingdestre) surname in Virginia.

1702. Quit Rent for New Kent County, Virginia, shows that Thomas
Poindexter owned 1000 acres.

Notes for SARAH CRAWFORD:
July 21, 1691. Sarah received 500 acres from her father, David

Hi Shawn:

The line you provide for George Poindexter, of New Kent Co., Virginia
looks good. I know nothing of these people, though, so I'm unable to
comment on the accuracy of the descent. Do you have sources for each
generation to support this line?

I do have one question. What evidence do you have that Catherine,
daughter of John Camel, married Renaud Lempriere, of St. Martin's
parish, Isle of Jersey7

As for Joan Plecy's ancestry, some time ago, I worked out a meandering
descent for her from Ela de Vitre, one time Countess of Salisbury, died
1233, who married (lst) William Paynell, died 1184; (2nd) Gilbert de
Tillieres, died 1190; William Fitz Patrick, Earl of Salisbury, died
1196; and Gilbert Malmains.

Ela de Vitre is the ancestress of the well known Longespee family
through her third marriage to William Fitz Patrick, Earl of Salisbury.
I descend from Ela through the Longespee family.

My primary source for the information I posted about the Poingdestre
family in Jersey is John Poindexter Landers, "Poingdestre-Poindexter: A
Norman Family through the Ages (1250-1977)," Published by Robert Downs
Poindexter in Austin, TX. Landers cites and quotes numerous primary
records in Jersey throughout his book. In describing the family of
Renaud Lempriere and Catherine Camel, he writes:

"Mention was made earlier of Renaud Lempriere (VI) the son of Jean
Lempriere (V) and Jehanette le Lorreur. Due to the recorded
proceedings of a trial in which he was involved, we have many vivid
details of life at Rozel Manor in the Fifteenth Century which would
otherwise have been unknown. In 1463 Renaud Lempriere was arrested for

plotting to expel the French, who, under Pierre de Breze, Count of

Maulevrier, had occupied Jersey for several years. It is stated
therein that Raulin Lempriere [a brother of Renaud, who appears on a
genealogy chart on the facing page--a note by Shawn] was born in about
1418. He had a bastard son, Jehan, who was said to play tennis at the
manor and "drink with the men." Renaud's wife was Katherine, daughter
of John Camel of Shapwick near Blandford in Dorset, and their
two "beautiful children" were Jean Lempriere (VII) and Catherine
Lempriere (VII)."

This is the only reference I find about Katherine's origins.

Could you please send me the names of the generations between Joan
Plecy and Ela de Vitre? Do you know the surname of John Camel's wife?
At some point, I would like to obtain a complete copy of your work on
the Camel family. Have you publish your work in one of the genealogy
journals or in a book?
