I'm trying to find out what families descended from close relatives of
Catherine Howard, wife of Henry VIII, may be presently living in the United
States, particularly in New England or other areas on the East Coast. I know
Catherine Howard herself had no children; I'm curious about descendants,
perhaps, of her brothers and sisters. To complicate matters, I'm looking for a
branch of the family whose surname begins with the letter "N" (or did at one
time).
You may have noticed that I'm thoroughly ignorant of genealogy. I believe
that's why I haven't been able to make sense of the results of my Google
efforts. So I'd be grateful not only for information, but also for pointers to
sources of information, suggestions regarding the interpretation of
information, witty remarks at my expense, or any comments at all.

If anyone with a surname beginning with N will do, I imagine the odds are
pretty good that there are several. If you need a particular N-surname for
reasons I cannot fathom, perhaps you might share it with the group and we
might be able to give more specific help.

What about Catherine’s half-sister, Isabel Leigh, who married
Sir Edward Baynton and had Henry, who married Anne Cavendish and had
Ferdinando Baynton ... who married Joan Weare and had Anne/Alice who
married Christopher Batt ... and came to Massachusetts and had Jane
Batt who married Peter Tappan, though possibly not in that order.
None of which begins with an “N” but this line did produce
plenty of New England descendents, scattered by now.

Thanks. I knew of the Calverts, but it's my impression that they settled in
Maryland, and the person who gave me this information insisted there was no
Maryland connection at all. (I'm aware that either "fact" may be incorrect.)

I'm sorry to talk in riddles, but that's how the information was presented to
me, as a riddle. "Look for a branch of the family whose name begins with 'N',"
is what I was told. I'm assuming, from the phrasing, that I'd be looking for a
prominent "branch" and not just anyone at all whose name began with N. Beyond
that, I have no information. I know that's annoying, believe me. I think the
whole purpose of the exchange was more to annoy me than to inform me, which is
why I'm fairly keen to solve the puzzle.
I did run across the name Neville among the Howard descendants, but wasn't able
to follow any Nevilles to the US, undoubtedly because of my ignorance of
genealogic research methods (or even of how to read a family tree, or whether
"family tree" is the correct term. LOL.)
Since this is something on the order of "will you help me settle a bet," I
fully understand if many consider it too trifling to bother with, and I greatly
appreciate any assistance offered. I'll have another look at the Calverts and
Somersets among the baffling array of genealogical resources, many of them
seemingly quite inadequate, to be found on the Web.
Thanks again.
Thanks, I'll have a look at them. The family of the person whose ancestors I'm
trying to find has lived in New England for several generations at least, I
believe.
