A key link in some of the purported royal descents was listed in the
7th edition of Ancestral Roots as "now disproved". I don't have AR7 in
front of me, but I'll post it later.
The following is not my work, but is reposted from the Winslow mail
list archives:

I posted this on the list along time ago but didn't receive any
response. I
can't see how the man could state it any clearer, "genealogists and
historians have tried to find an aristocratic background for him
[Edward Winslow],
but to no avail."
I am posting the following to see what responses there might be out
there.
The quote below on the Pilgrim Edward Winslow comes from "Plymouth
Colony,
Its History & People 1620-1691" by Eugene Aubrey Stratton 1986.
Other articles of interest are Lemuel Shattuck, "Genealogical Memoir of
the Descendents of Edward Winslow, Governor of Plymouth Colony," NEHGR
4:297; John H. Sheppard, "Genealogy of the Winslow Family," NEHGR
17:159;
William S. Apleton, "English Ancestry of the Winslow Family," NEHGR
21:209,
24:329, 43:433; and John G. Hunt, "The Mayflower Winslows - Yeomen or
Gentlemen?," NEHGR 121:25, 122:175, 124:182.
Some of these contain information about his brothers also, but should
be
used cautiously, for there are known errors. The chart given by
Appleton,
for example, going back to John Winslow and Agnes Throckmorton is sheer
fantasy; Agnes Throckmorton married a Thomas Winslow, but there is no
known
connection between this Thomas and the father or grandfather of Edward
Winslow. Because Edward seemed to be the most aristocratic of the
Mayflower pasengers, genealogists and historians have tried to find an
aristocratic background for him, but to no avail. His father, Edward
Winslow, was a prosperous salt merchant, but his grandfather Kenelm
Winslow
described himself in his will as a "yeoman," and no one has been able
to
discover Kenelm's ancestry with any certainty. There have been attempts
to
find an aristocratic origin for Edward's mother, Magdelene Oliver - see
for
example, John G. Hunt, "Clues to the Ancestry of Winslow of Droitwich,"
TAG
41:168, "Governor Edward Winslow's Mother's Family, the Olivers," TAG
42:52, "A Note on the Winslow Births in England," TAG 42:186 (which was
a
response to Meridith B. Colket's commentary "The Winslow 'Royal Line' "
TAG
42:56,) and "A Winslow Pilgrim Note - Addendum," TAG 43:239. Davis P.
and
Frances K. Holton, The Winlsow Memorial, 2 vols. (1887, 1888) is the
only
book-size family history so far, and includes the descendents of his
brothers, but is not reliable.
Hunt's premise was that if it could be proved that Kenelm Winslow
married Elizabeth Foliot of Pyrton, Worcs., then there would be a valid
line. I don't think that any one has proven the case, directly or
indirectly.

Is that Edward born 1595, or the Harvard grad Edward born 1714? The
former's alleged royal descent is much in question, the latter is more
likely. See the descent of Herbert Pelham, NEGHR (4) 302.
