Anne Deveruex had been stated by COLLINS' PEERAGE and in BURKE'S
PEERAGE 106TH Edition, to have married Henry Clifford, 10th Lord
Clifford, but CP has no such marriage for the 10th Lord Clifford.
The Clifford pedigree in the 1574 Visitation of Kent helps explain how
the Anne Devereux/10th Lord Clifford marriage mistake occurred.
The Visitation gives, "Richard Clifford, 2 sonne [of Lewis Clifford
and 1st wife Mildred Boorne], = Anne, daughter of the Lord Stafford
Earl of Wiltshire by the Lord Ferrers sister."
They had "Henry, 2 sonne maried Anne sister to the Viscount Hereford."
Henry and Anne had a son "Sir Nicholas Clifford married the daughter
of Sir William Drury, Kt., with one dau."
The informant for the pedigree was George Clifford, brother of Henry,
and son of Richard Clifford & Lady Anne Stafford.
So it appears that Anne Devereux, sister of Walter, 1st Viscount
Hereford, was married to a Henry Clifford, but not the 10th Lord
Clifford. Her husband was of the Clifford family of Kent (the
Visitation does not say where the family was seated, unfortunately).
I'm not sure exactly which "Lord Stafford Earl of Wiltshire" was the
grandfather of Henry Clifford, husband of Anne Devereux, but if the
Earl's wife was indeed "the Lord Ferrers sister" as the pedigree
states, then that could explain the marriage of Anne Devereux to Henry
Clifford (who would be a kinsman).
The PRO website catalogue has been unavailable this morning, so I
haven't yet verified the Anne Devereux/Henry Clifford marriage, or
their son Sir Nicholas Clifford. But as the Visitation informant
George Clifford was so closely related, it would seem reliable.
My guess is Anne's marriage to Henry Clifford took place after the one
to Sir David Owen. Hopefully, the PRO can shed further light.
If anyone has anything further on these Cliffords of Kent, I'd much
appreciate it.

Whoops - my chronology was WAY off! The Anne Devereux who was wife of
Henry Clifford, of Kent, and mother of Sir Nicholas Clifford, was not
the sister of the 1st Viscount Hereford. She was the sister of the
2nd Viscount Hereford (who in 1572 became the 1st Earl of Essex). She
was daughter of Sir Richard Devereux, of Carmarthen (b. by 1513, d. 12
Nov. 1547) and his wife Lady Dorothy Hastings.
Sir Nicholas Clifford's wife was Frances Drury, daughter of Sir
William Drury, MP, and his wife Elizabeth Stafford. Their daughter
Frances Stafford married Sir Edward Ayscoghe, (of Skelsey?), b. 1596,
d. 1654.

I'd still be interested in finding out which Lord Ferrers sister
married an Earl of Wiltshire.
