1285. M Emma. In 1324 he joined the sack of the Earl of Lancaster's park
at Tetbury after the Battle of Boroughbridge. In 1328 he & his wife
settled the manor of Haywood on their sons Roger, John & Richard. M.P. for
Staffs., 1332-3 & for Salop 1344. J.P. for Staffs., 1341-5. Collector of
Subsidy, 1344. Sheriff of Staffs. & Salop, 1343-4 & 1344-5. Escheator of
Staffs. & Salop, 1344-5. Died before 1353. He had issue: WSAS 1917/8, pp

Stafford, 1342. M.P. for Staffs., 1344 & 1358. He served in the Gascon
campaign of 1345-6 in the retinue of Lord Stafford. J.P. for Staffs., 1355
till death. He served with Lord Stafford in the campaign of 1359. M

Sir THOMAS ASTON, Kt., M.P., J.P., of Haywood & Brocton, Staffs., Born c.
1345. He was a minor at his father's death & became a ward of his
stepfather, Sir William Chetwynd. He came of age, c. 1370, & joined the
retinue of Hugh, 2nd Earl of Stafford, probably for the expedition to
France, 1375. Assessor of Tax, Staffs, May 1379. Knighted by July 1380.
In the summer of 1380 Ralph, Baron Basset, of Drayton, retained him as a
knight to campaign with him in France. He was on many commissions between
1380 & 1406. M.P. for Staffs., 1380, 1384, 1388, 1393, 1399 & 1406.
Forester of Cannock Chase, Staffs., by 16 June 1385. J.P. for Staffs., 28
May 1386 to Nov. 1389, 28 June 1390 to Nov. 1397 & 28 Nov. 1399 to Feb.
1406. Collector of a royal aid, Staffs., Dec. 1401. Treasurer of the
Household of Edmund, Earl of Stafford, 1402-3, who was one of the chief
casualties from among Henry IV's supporters at the Battle of Shrewsbury.

1385 Elizabeth Cloddeshall, widow of Sir William Devereux, Kt., M.P., of

Sir ROGER ASTON, Kt., M.P., J.P., of Haywood, Brocton & Tixall, Staffs.,
Born c. 1380. He was an esquire in the retinue of the Earl of Stafford, c.
1400. After the death of the Earl of Stafford he entered the royal service
& was made Lieutenant of the Tower of London by Henry V. He fought at the
Battle of Agincourt, 1415. Constable of the Tower of London, 1420-46. He &
his 2nd wife were mentioned in a fine concerning certain lands at Langley
Meynell & Yeaveley, Derbys., 1424/5. Sheriff of Staffs., 1426/7 & 1431/2.
J.P. for Staffs., 1430-46. Mentioned in a Deed of his 1st wife's
brother-in-law, Sir Hugh Willoughby, Kt., of Wollaton, Notts., 24 March
1435. M 1st Joyce, d. of Sir Baldwin Freville, Kt., of Tamworth Castle,
Warw., & his 2nd wife Maud (See FREVILLE). M 2nd before 1424/5 Elizabeth
(d.s.p.), d. of Sir William Meynill, Kt., of Yeaveley, Derbys. (See
MEYNELL). Died 1446/7. He had issue by his 1st wife: VCH Staffs V, p 6
