Penelope Jane:
Margaret Bonville's mother was Margaret Grey, dau of Reynold, Lord
Grey of Ruthyn and Margaret de Ros. Margaret Bonville was an unbroken
female-line descendant of Edward I:
Edward I, King of England m. Eleanor of Castile
Joan 'of Acre' m. Gilbert de Clare, E. of Gloucester
Margaret de Clare m. Hugh d'Audley, E. of Gloucester
Margaret d'Audley m. Ralph Stafford, 1st E. of Stafford
Beatrice Stafford m. Thomas de Ros, L. Ros
Margaret de Ros m. Reynold de Grey, L. Grey of Ruthin
Margaret Grey m. William Bonville, 1st L. Bonville
*Margaret Bonville m. Sir William Courtenay of Powderham
Margaret Bonville's father, Sir William Bonville (later 1st Lord
Bonville), was a close friend and colleague of Sir Philip Courtenay of
Powderham, father of Margaret's husband Sir William Courtenay. In the
first half of the 15th century (the time when the two men arranged the
marriage of their children), the Courtenays of Powderham had a huge
falling out with the senior branch of the family headed by the Earl of
Devon. The falling out had to do with Sir Philip's friendship with
the Bonvilles, who were regarded by the Earl of Devon clan as becoming
too influential in the county.
So the marriage of Margaret Bonville with William Courtenay of
Powderham probably annoyed the Earl of Devon to no end.
Hope this helps.

her mother was Margaret Grey dau of Reynold Grey, 3rd Lord Grey of
Ruthin and Margaret de Ros. See the archives for a post by Don Stone.
The Grey de Ruthin connection that occurs one generation later in the Beatrice
Stafford=Thomas de Ros line shares a common de Grey of Ruthin ancestry with
the Wrights of Holderness, Yorks (and Gunpowder Plot intrigue). The immigrant
descendant of this Wright line emigrated to VA circa 1655 and became the father
of Major Francis Wright (nephew of Col Nicholas Spencer) who 1st married
Anne Washington d/o Col John Washington.

Go to the search page at

and search the 1998 archives for the combination
"Margaret Grey" and "Reynold Grey"
and you will get two posts, the second of which is the one from me.
