Complete Peerage 12 Pt. 1 (1953): 500-503 has a good account of the
life of William de Warenne, 6th Earl of Surrey (died 1240). Regarding
his marriages, it states he married "1stly, Maud." In footnote m on
page 502, the editor states that Maud "is alleged to have been da. of
an Earl of Arundel, to have d. 6 Feb. 1215/6 and to have been bur. in
the chapter-house of Lewes Priory."
That Earl William did in fact marry a daughter of the Earl of Arundel
is proven by a Curia Regis Roll document dated 1207 which reads as
follows:
"Et sciendum quod comes [Roger Bigod] quod quidam recognitores sunt
homines comitis War', qui duxit filiam comitis Arund'." [Reference:
Curia Regis Rolls, 5 (1931), pp. 33-34].
This record makes it clear that William de Warenne, Earl of Surrey
(here styled Earl of Warenne) married ("duxit") before 1207 to a
daughter ("filiam") of the Earl of Arundel ("comitis Arund'.").
Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah
