I have recently been looking at the family of Thomas Harvey of
Elmstoke, Lincolnshire. Thomas died in 1544 [1, 2] leaving his four
daughters as co-heiresses [3]. I think his wife was named Elizabeth
and she died in 1554 [4].
The four daughters were Dorothy wife of William Croftes, Lucy wife of
Thomas Cotton of Conington (Hunts.), Joan wife of Hugh Haselrigge, and
Barbara wife of John Fowler [3].
VCH Warwick says Thomas Harvey was a merchant and cites Dugdale's
remarks about Sir Thomas Cotton for this information. At the
dissolution of the monasteries Thomas Harvey was active in acquiring
land. Amongst other properties, at his death he held Burton Hastings
and Fleckney, Leics., Leek Wooton, Warcs.
Has anyone else come across this family? I am particularly curious to
know if Thomas Harvey of Elmstoke is in any way related to Thomas
Harvey, second husband of Philippa Willoughby (d. 1517) who firstly
married Sir Robert Moton of Peckleton, Leics.

I believe it is the same Thomas Harvey.

Thanks Doug,
I had seen the VCH Leicestershire citation but not the Visitation. The
Visitation is the only place I have come across that attaches both
Thomas Harvey and Robert Moton as husbands of Philippa Willoughby. It
seems nobody has any real idea who the father of Philppa was and how
she fitted into the various Willoughby branches flourishig at the
time.
However. there appears to be something very wrong with either the
descendancy or the dates in this family, (or my reading of them!)
Sir Robert Moton of Peckleton (d 1499) marries Philippa Willoughby (d
1517) [1,7] and they are the parents of Elizabeth married to Sir John
Harrington (d 1553) [2,7] and Anne married to Thomas Beaumont of
Thringston (d after 1495) [3]. Already the alarm bells are ringing
with Elizabeth, born before 1499, married to a man who dies in 1589
and Anne her supposed sister married to a man dying up to 58 years
before his supposed brother-in-law.
Moving on, the widowed Philippa then marries Thomas Harvey of
Elmsthorp, Licolnshire [1]. They are the parents of Dorothy Harvey [1]
(although this may be wrong as VCH Warwick says Dorothy was a
co-heiress of Elizabeth) who marries a William Croft. Philippa
apparently dies in 1517 [5] and Thomas remarries to an Elizabeth.
Thomas and Elizabeth are the parents of Barbara, Joan and Lucy [1].
Thomas Harvey dies in 1543 [4], and his wife Elizabeth in 1554. The
history of some of the land inherited by the 4 daughters of Thomas
Harvey is covered in VCH Warwick & VCH Leicestershire [6] and this
provides further evidence they were in fact daughters of Thomas
Harvey.
Coincidentally I appear to have descents from both Anne Moton and
Barbara Harvey, hence the interest in this family. Moreover, there
appears to be other modern day descents from various of the other
daughters of Thomas Harvey and Sir Robert Moton. Has anyone lese had a
look at this?
Louise
