Carew

I'm trying to figure out the Carew family - of which there seem to be
several branches. Burke's History of the Commoners says that the Carews
descend directly from Gerald of Windsor, who married Nesta, daughter of
Rhys ap Tewdwr, Prince of South Wales. Unfortunately, he skips over the
entire lineage after that until he gets to Sir Nicholas Carew (during the
reign of Edward I), grandfather of Sir John Carew, who married a daughter
of John Mohun of Dunster. Anyone know of the missing lines?

I also have a (Alice?) Carew, who married a William or John Prather around
1470 in Wiltshire. Slim chance, I know, but does anyone have anything on
her? She may have been a member of the Pole-Carew branch.

Also, this List has been just terrific lately - informative, interesting,
entertaining and quite varied in topic. No slashing and burning,
insulting and back-stabbing - a real pleasure to read. Thank you!

I too have a disconnected Carew. Does anyone know the lineage of Thomas
Carew whose daughter Elizabeth m. Thomas Tremayne (d. 1 FEB 1482) of
Collacomb, co. Devon?

9. Sir Nicholas Carreu d.1311, of Carew, Idrone and Moulsford, summ. to
Parliament 1300/01
10. Sir John Carreu d.1323/24, Carew, Idrone and Moulsford m(1) Eleanor dau.
of Sir William de Mohun of Ottery by Beatrix dau. of Reynold fitz Piers
which William wasa younger son of Sir Reynold de Mohum of Dunster by his
2nd wife, m.(2) Joan Talbot d. after 1335 dau. of Gilbert lord Talbot.

I have now found the details of the VCH reference and have set out the
succession to the Moulsford fee.

I; m. Nest dau. of Rhys ap Tewdr Mawr

3. William fitz Gerald d.1173, bro. of Maurice ancester of the Geraldines
4. Odo fitz William d.ca.1202, of Carew and Idrone m. NN dau. of Richard

fitz Tancred, of Haverfordwest; Odo succeeded his bro. Raymond who dsp.

5. William de Carreu d.1213, of Carew & Idrone

6. Nicholas de Carreu d.ca.1228 succ. 6 and is said to have the latter's son
7. William de Carreu d. ? after 1277, of Carew, Idrone and Moulsford. He
was probably identical with the William de Carreu who had a serjeanty
of co. Waterford in Ireland in 1277
8. Nicholas de Carreu d.ca.1286 (probably son of 7) m. Avice Tute

9. Sir Nicholas Carreu d.1311, of Carew, Idrone and Moulsford, summ. to
Parliament 1300/01
10. Sir John Carreu d.1323/24, Carew, Idrone and Moulsford m(1) Eleanor dau.

which William was a younger son of Sir Reynold de Mohum of Dunster by

his 2nd wife, m.(2) Joan Talbot d. after 1335 dau. of Gilbert lord
Talbot

It would appear that 11a Nicholas son of 10 by the first wife died about the
same time as his father. 11b Sir John (d.1362) was the son of 10 by the
second wife. 10 also had a younger brother 10b Thomas. There was a dispute
over the succession to Moulsford. 10b held it in 1331 but it finally passed
to his nephew 11b.

11b. Sir John Carew (d.1362), of Moulsford, justiciar of Ireland (see DNB)
12. Leonard Carew (d.1369), of Moulsford
13. Thomas Carew was an infant at the death of his father. He may be
identical with Thomas Carew who held Moulsford in 1401 who made a
settlemnt on his wife Elizabeth (who was living in 1437) in 1410
14. Nicholas Carew son of Thomas (but not necessarily by Elizabeth with whom
he entered into a settlement in 1437); m. Joan (d.1451) who after the
death of Nicholas married Robert de Vere
15. Thomas Carew, of Moulsford was son of 14 and his wife Joan
16. Nicholas Carew, of Moulsford
17. Edmund Carew, of Moulsford sold his Berkshire lands in 1497
