Just got an email from NEHGS notifying of the upcoming issue of
Register - an interesting article will appear "English Ancestry of
Bennett Hodsoll, First Wife of Edmond1 Freeman of Sandwich,
Massachusetts
Richard L. Bush" - I wonder if this leads to, or will lead to medieval
ancestry. If I recall the Freeman family was of the gentry -- and
Hodsoll was a very old and distinct surname in that part of England.

I haven't seen this article yet, but some years ago I spent a very
brief amount of time looking into this couple, before moving on to
other things. These Hodsolls appeared - from research published in
Archaeologia Cantiana in 1882, among other places - to have a descent
leading back to the Hodsolls of Ash in Kent in the early 1400s, so
hopefully the article will build on and better develop the descent put
forth there. The impression I took away was that the Freemans probably
moved up in the world thanks to marriage with the better-connected
Hodsolls.

John Hodsoll (+1617) is uniformly referred to as Gent. in contemporary
records, but not so Edmund Freeman Snr, father of the colonial settler
- See below.

When someone's had a chance to look at this article, please advise if
it addresses Bennett's possible descent from the Gratwicke family of
Jarvis.

The issue apparently isn't out just yet - as a member I received the
regular email from the NEHGS which provided the table of contents of
the next issue. When I get it and read the article I can post the
"basics" - I am hoping as you mention that it might address the
Gratwick family.

Thanks!

Read online this article about Bennett Hodsoll- unfortunately for
those of us who descend from Bennett we do not have the "Gratwick"
line apparently, but instead the "Maundy" family. Richard L Bush does
provide some very interesting information about the Hodsoll family
though and I'd be curious to know if this Maundy family can be traced
back any further.
