Hello All,
I spoke with Andrew MacEwen concerning the pedigree of the
Montfichet family, and in particular re: the suggested basis for the
relationship between Margaret Danielston (1st wife of Sir William de
Cunyngham, d. bef 1 Mar 1418/9) and Lady Mary/Mariota Stewart, dau.
of King Robert III [1]. Andrew stated that the pedigree is "on the
right track", and that he agreed that Dervorguilla, wife of Sir
William de Montfichet was most likely of the Abernethy family, and not
more closely allied to the Lords of Galloway. Further, he stated that
the explanation of this relationship provides additional support for
the identification of Annabela Drummond's mother as Mary de
Montfichet, a traditional assignment but - as set forth in Scots
Peerage [2] - without direct evidence to date.
Some additional documentation concerning the earlier Montfichets
has been found in the Chartulary of Coupar Angus [3]. While the
charters do not prove any additional relationships, there are a number
of charters (see pedigree below) which show Sir William de Montfichet
acting in concert with Sir Alexander de Abernethy ca. 1307-1312. By
my conjecture as to the identity of Sir William's grandmother
Dervorgilla, Sir Alexander de Abernethy would have been his 1st
cousin 1x removed.
The following pedigree documents the descent from William de
Montfichet of Cargill, co. Perth (fl. 1220) insofar as it can be
reconstructed at present. Should anyone have additional
documentation, comment or criticism, that would be welcome.
Cheers,
John *
