Per Reuters Newswire (today) - Stockholm, Baron Otto Karl von Rosen, a Swedish
spy helped sow the seeds of today's anthrax bio-warfare scare as long ago as
World War One when he plotted to poison reindeer and horses with anthrax-laced
sugar cubes. In mid-winter 1917, Germany sent Baron Otto Karl von Rosen, a
mercenary from neutral Sweden, on a mission to sabotage British Arctic supply
lines to its ally Russia, a crime historian told Reuters Wednesday. Norwegian
police arrested von Rosen with 19 sugar cubes containing tiny glass vials of
anthrax...The baron's co-conspirators had planned to spread an anthrax epidemic
by feeding the poisoned treats to army horses and reindeer. The animals were
pulling sledges laden with arms and supplies across the frozen tundra to Russia
from the port of Skibotn in northern Norway....

To keep this on topic, does said baron fit into matrix of european royal
families? Can anyone run back his roots cc 1500-1000.

His von Rosen family (there is more than one) can be traced back to the
1500s in Estonia. His line was ennobled in Sweden in 1746 (introduced
1752) and the Baronial title was granted in 1772 (introduced 1776). See
Gustaf Elgenstierna, *Den introducerade Svenska Adelns Ättartavlor*, vol.
VI [1931], pp. 412-432. Baron Otto Karl Robert von Rosen (b. 1884) appears
on p. 416, at the bottom of the first column.

While I can show some relationships from him into the Swedish nobility, I
can't (easily) find any Royal connections for him.

Further discussion on his ancestry might be better directed to the
GEN-ROYAL mailing list, also at rootsweb.com.

Just to chose things, there are two distinct Rosen families - both of which were in Estonia. The red and
the white - unless I am mistaken, Otto Karl was a white rose. The transition of the family to Sweden
comes from the Sweden time in Estonia, whihc ended with the Great Northern War.

The Rosens are just your bog standard baltic german familys, not connected to the royals expect for "um
Ecken". They are not Stenbocks, Baranovs or Zoege Manteuffels

There full family tree to about the 1920s is within the Adels Handbuch fuer Estland. I have not
photocopied the relevant pages, yet, but need to as in the late medieval era I have many Rosens in my
tree.
