Dear Brom, Kevan, Ian, Richard, Virginia, et al.,
In addition to the many sources of information on the Hildyard
family, the will of Robert Hildyard, esq., of Winestead in
Holderness, co. Yorks. (d. bef 21 Aug 1489) can be found in
Testamenta Eboracensia [1]. Of particular interest, but
(previously) uncertain chronology, is a pedigree included on
p. 12 with reference to a suit in an ecclesiastic court in York
in 1370, having to do with the inheritance of the lands of John
Hildyard of Arnold in Holderness, co. Yorks. and Normanby, co.
Lincs., as follows:
Robert = the mother of Sir John
Hildyard I de Sutton, sen. knt.
I
I
Peter = Alicia Sir Robert = Amisia
Hildyard I Hildyard, knt. I
I I

John Hildyard
It is evident from the passing of John Hildyard’s holdings in
Arnold and Normanby to his son Peter that the suit was judged in
favour of the young Peter Hildyard. It does appear that the first
Peter Hildyard in the above pedigree was the elder brother of the
first Robert, whose wife ("mother of Sir John de Sutton"), Joan de
Scures, brought Riston in Holderness to her husband. The
consanguinity indicated by this relationship may have something
to do with the secretive marriage of John and Catherine Hildyard:
there is no reference to a dispensation that I have seen to date,
but it would seem that one must have been obtained if possibly
after the fact - there was no impediment maintained in the
inheritance of Riston and Normanby.
I have accumulated additional details on these earlier
Hildyards, primarily from Poulson but also more recently from
‘Knights of Edward I’ [HSP], Kirkby’s Inquest, and Yorkshire
Inquisitions (W. Brown, ed.). The subsequent posts will likely be
too large to be forwarded through GEN-MED, so I am advising those
interested (Hildyard descendants and not) to watch for these in
the next few days. As always, any additional documentation,
comment and criticism is welcome.
Cheers,
John *

Thank you for that msg on the Hildyards. Though I'm currently focused on my
wife's French-Canadian lines, I do try to keep up on reading what comes
across sgm if only to pick up on the lines in which I'm highly interested.
The Hildyards of Winestead are certainly one of those. I look forward to
seeing what additional information you may gather; and thanks again for
sharing.
Cheers,
Kevan
Dear Kevan, et al.,
The relationship between Peter Hildyard of Arnold and Robert
Hildyard of Riston (the first individuals in the 1370 Hildyard
pedigree) has been confirmed by the following document, found on
the PRO site:
lease dated ca. 1310,
" Between Robert Hyldeyhard son of Robert Hildeyhard of Ryston in
Holderness, of the one part, and Robert son of Peter Hyldeyhard,
his cousin, of the other part; of a site of a quarter of an acre
for a bercary in the Westkereside in Sutton in Holderness, called
the Hayre, between the Abbey of Meaus on the west, and the culture
of the Rector of Sutton Church on the east; also common of pasture
for 270 "bidentes" (sheep in their 2nd year) in the pasture called
the Westkereside in Sutton, for life, at a rent of 2d.
Witnesses: Sir John de Sutton, Sir John de Barton of Attyngwyk,

same, and others." [PRO, West Yorkshire Archive Service,

Additional cites from the PRO site have been noted which also
evidence that Peter Hildyard and Robert of Riston were brothers
(see the pedigree of Hildyard of Arnold below). For clarity's
sake, the 1370 pedigree should now be redrawn as follows:
